'Hello, Alice!'
'Um... Who are you?'
'You don't remember me?'
'I am quite sure I don't even know you.'
'Oh! I am quite sure you know me. I met your mom years back and you were what, maybe 3 years or something.'
'Maybe. But what exactly are you doing here, right now?'
Alice didn't know what it was but she knew she didn't like this guy. He seemed to have a seriously negative aura around him. And she definitely didn't like the way the guy looked at her.
'I was appointed by your mother to look after you after she died.'
'Oh! So, you are my legal guardian?'
'Yes. I am soo looking forward to look after you, Alice.'
Maybe it was the way he said it or maybe the way he looked at her when he did, but that statement sent chills down her spine.
'How are you even related to me? Why did my mom give me to YOU?'
'You say that like it's a bad thing. I am your mom's cousin, Warren. And I am the only living relative you have. That means that I was the only person your mom could leave me to.'
Alice was shocked. She didn't expect that she would have only one relative left. She knew her mom never talked of them but that's because she thought she never liked or got along with them. But what confused her more was Gina. If Warren was the only living guy, then who was Gina? She assumed Gina could be her mom's long lost cousin or sister or something. Maybe Warren too thought Gina died or didn't know about Alice, just like her mom probably thought. She decided she wouldn't talk about any of this to Warren. As she was absorbed in her thoughts Warren spoke again,
'If it wasn't for your stupid mom's stupid will, then I would have no problem in just taking you from here already.'
Alice was stunned. She was wrong about him. She didn't not like the man. She DESPISED him. Completely. He just called her mom stupid to her own face. But what was the will he was talking about? She wanted to know more about that. So, she decided to ignore the fact that this guy had called her mom stupid.
'What will?'
'She made a statement in her will that if by the time you turn 16, another person comes along to adopt you or take you into their custody, then you have the choice of who you can be with. I don't even know what your mom must have been thinking. Who in the world did she think would come to get you? But because of this stupid problem, I now have to wait three more days. Because in three days you turn 16 and then I get custody of you.'
This was too much for Alice to take. Why did her mom write something as weird as that? Did she think or rather hope that Gina would come along, exactly like she did? How was it that the will that her mom made stated that she could have say in the matter when she turned 16 when her mom died in a robbery? The entire case was so confusing she felt. Her head was hurting from all the drama around her and she felt tired and exhausted suddenly. Warren seemed unconcerned about her and she felt she needed some time alone. She interrupted him while he was speaking and he looked angry when she did so.
'I understand that you desperately need me. But I am really not in the mood for anything right now. Please leave.' And with that Alice just sank back to her pillow. Warren did not look pleased but at this moment she cared least about that. He took his leave but not without muttering some inaudible curses. Alice could not sleep for a long time. She tossed and turned around and finally gave up. She decided to call Janice and talk to her about it when Dylan entered the room.
