I stroll into the Cupids Matchmaking Service. After all that has happened I should be more covert. But I grow weary of this charade. And I am confident they cannot catch me.
The black and white chequered reception hall is abandoned when I enter though. I walk to the reception desk and press a small bell on the surface. A slender male with black hair rushes out from the door into the offices.
His eyes narrow when he sees me and he reaches for an arrow in the quiver over his shoulder.
"Don't bother," I say.
"I take it from your expression that you know who I am?" I say.
He nods slowly.
"Then you know what I can do?"
He nods again.
"Good. Now – take me to Crystal."
He hesitates. Panic dances about his brown irises.
"I...I'm afraid I can't...I have to..."
He pulls a black arrow from his quiver.
"Stand down, Carter," a scolding female voice resounds around the room from behind me.
A grin widens on my face. I look over my shoulder.
Crystal stands in the entrance, her blonde hair almost luminescent in the light of the moon. She's changed into the usual white Matchmaking Agent suit – which must have turned heads if any humans saw her out and about at this time of night. There's a bow slung over one shoulder, a quiver full of arrows over the other.
Her eyes are blazing blue as they hold mine.
"I was looking for you. I was worried you'd got into trouble at Olympian Corp," her eyes brush over the makeshift bandage over my arm. "Which clearly you did..."
"Just a scratch, my love."
"I'm not your love," she walks across the room, past me and Carter, and through the door into the Cupids Matchmaking Service office. "Come on then," she says without looking back. "We have some things to discuss."
I flash my teeth at Carter – who averts his eyes, his expression marginally embarrassed – and I follow Crystal into a vast, domed room filled with lines of wooden desks. There are a few agents here and there- but the space is mostly quiet; the only sound being the scratching of quills on dry parchment.
Crystal leads me to a small room and closes the door behind me.
For a moment she is stood just inches away. I inhale her scent; burnt sugar and London air. She looks up at me, her eyes catching mine, and my skin buzzes. Then she averts her gaze and takes a seat behind a dark, mahogany desk. She gestures that I sit at the other side.
"Well...what did you find out? What happened to you?"
"I'm very well, thank you for asking. And how are you?"
She exhales heavily.
"Mino...I let you put Cal to sleep so you could gather information. I trusted you. And I'm expecting trouble any minute now. As soon as Carter tells Cal you're here he'll come for you. Now, please – what did you find out?"
Her eyes burn into mine and I sigh.
"No time for niceties, I get it," I lean forward, resting my arms on the table. My grin broadens, "You're not going to believe what they're doing in there..."
