As I walked into the restaurant, I felt that nothing could go well tonight

As I walked into the restaurant, I felt that nothing could go well tonight. All hell was going to break loose. I had gone for one too many blind dates this summer. Starting my senior year in a week and a half, this is what I'm doing with my time. Blind dates.

A waitress walks up to me and greets me with her idiotic, plastic smile.

"Amber Weismann, table for two".
She greets me and smiles even brighter, beginning to walk to a table as she tells me to follow her.
The table is in a corner, with its side up to the tiled wall. The restaurant is kind of a mixture of a typical diner, neon lights and weird walls, but also very classy, pretty chandeliers and nice, clean aesthetic. As messy as that may seem.

My date, as my friend described as punctual and organized had not shown up yet, and I am 10 minutes late. He couldn't have shown up, waited for me and then left. Had he?
I sat down at the table for a minute and looked around. I might as well go, I had been waiting to eat that tub of ice cream that mom bought 3 days ago.

As I was about to leave, a dark haired boy ran up to my table, panting. "Hi! Are you Amber?" I nodded. "Oh great I'm Spencer. I'm so so sorry I'm late, usually I'm not this late but my younger sister got her hair stuck in a hairdryer and no one else was home-" He looked at me and laughed at himself. "I'm guessing you don't want to know about all of that." He took a seat opposite me.
"I really don't know what to say, to be perfectly honest with you", he looked up at me from the menu, a confused look on his face. "Wait, uhh... Your name is Amber, correct? I'm not ambushing someone's else's date?"

"Who are you?" I said, holding my laughter. "You are nothing like my friend described". His face went quickly from confusion to a look of bewilderment.
"Well, I can't answer that."

We sat in silence for a good moment, looking down at our laps. Normally, I'd be the one talking, snarky comebacks and all, embarrassing my date. His grey eyes and chocolate brown skin put me to awe. I couldn't stop staring at him, taking in everything he was. The way he licked his lips when he was confused. My mouth couldn't move and my tongue wouldn't obey.

"Is your friends name, Ingrid?" I looked up at my date, forgetting he was there.
"Yeah, Ingrid Platt." I said.

He didn't say anything else, our waiter had arrived and was asking for our orders. I looked down at the menu, realizing that I had barely looked at it. So I went for the basics.
"I'll have a cheeseburger and a milkshake please. Do fries come with?"

The waiter took our orders and left. When we were waiting for our food, he tried to talk to me. But I was so tired of the same thing over and over and over. He didn't say things right. But I couldn't speak. He was so beautiful. He looked so elegant when he wasn't talking. His words didn't match with his exterior.

"So do you go to high school?" He paused and began again: "my friend never told me how old you were."

My mind went looking for a comeback, but I was too late. The waiter had arrived with our food.

"What? Hoped I was a MILF? Cougar? Too bad."

Not good enough of a comeback. I would have loved to see his face though.

We ate our meal in silence. I didn't bother to eat with manners. I stuffed the cheeseburger in and gulped the milkshake. Spencer ate a rare steak and drank his water with nice manners. He didn't say anything about my eating habits.

I stood up to go to the bathroom, wordlessly.
"Hey. Where are you going? Not even a goodbye?"
I was so done with him that I just walked away. I heard his chair being pushed and footsteps behind me. When I was about to close the bathroom door, I saw his sad face as his hand stopped the door from closing.
"Look, Amber, I know I'm just some guy on a blind date that's awkward and talks way too much, and this was a pretty bad date. So if you wouldn't mind, I'd like to take you on another one."
I was so close to slamming the door on his face, but instead I said something that boggled me.

"When?"

He smiled.
