The Woman in the Water

It was a family reunion. The had a picnic by the river. It was a lovely, sunny day. A little girl, six years old, raced down by the river. The current was cold and sluggish, but the river was very deep. She looked down, and she saw a woman sinking to the bottom. She stared, mesmerized. Her mother approached her. She looked up at her mother and pointed. "Mama, mama, look. There's a woman sinking in the water." She said, almost in a trance. But all her mother saw was her reflection. She checked the little girls forehead for a fever and hurried her over to the shade to eat. She never saw the woman again.

They all agreed to meet by the river. It was prom after all. She arrived early and went and sat by the river. She remembered when she was a little girl and came down to this river for family reunions. Suddenly, she fell in. She struggled at first but then soon succumbed to the cold water. She stared up, and for one second the moon looked like the sun. She thought she saw a little girl staring down as her vision blurred and her lungs filled with water. At last se hit the bottom, and everything faded away.

Yesterday the Timber River, slow, deep and sluggish, claimed another victim. A sixteen year old girl waiting for her friends fell in and drown. Strangely enough, interviews with her mother confirm the ten years before, the young girl had seen a "Woman in the water". Her mother said "The strangest part was, her body looked exactly like the girl she claimed to see in the water that fateful day ten years ago. It was strange how beautiful she looked despite being.... {a/n at this point she broke down into tears}
