Chapter Seven

I pulled myself out of Jack's embrace suddenly and look up at his confused face.

"I-I can't. I won't Jack. I won't let you do this. You can't protect me Jack, I'll be fine. And I can't do...this... we can't happen." I said fumbling over my words as I stood up dusting wood chips from my pants. Jack bolted up grabbing my arms and forcing me to look at him.

"Eve please. Let me please. I can't just let you leave by yourself." he said, I looked up at his face with a frown, his beautiful eyes were sad. So sad, but why....

"I'm not alone, not really. There's Luna... She'll keep me safe. And why do you care so much Jack? Why?" I broke away from his grasp standing tall in front of him.

"I can't say." Jack looked away from me, unable to meet my gaze. There's something he's hiding. Something he won't tell me.

"Well I won't let you risk your life for me Jack. I'm a Salio. I'm bound to die. You know that, it's my curse." I played with my moon necklace, a reminder of my father and who he was. A Salio, like father like daughter. My father died, killed by a werewolf. This is my fate and I won't put Jack at risk.

I turned around and walked away from Jack, not looking back, not letting myself fall into that rabbit hole. My heart ached a bit, as if I left a piece behind but I shook the feeling off and strode off with my shoulders back and my head held high.

My father. A great man. I think. I don't remember him much, I do know that he was a Salio. Like me he had pale skin and and a scruffy head of platinum blonde hair. He was a tall skinny man. I do remember his eyes; they were like mine, crystal blue, and they would twinkle like stars when he smiled. He was always smiling... He was unfortunately killed when I was a child. I remember that day. I was about eight....

I woke up early that morning. I was still bleary eyed when I came into the kitchen where my dad was lacing up his hiking boots.

"Hey princess, what are you doing up so early?" my dad asked scooping me up in his arms. I was tired and didn't really realize how off he was that day. Thinking back now, I realize that he was nervous, on edge.

He had set me down, hurriedly making his way to the door. I bobbled behind him, curious of where he was going. He turned around and looked down at me with a sad smile.

"Come now Eve, go back to bed honey," he squat down in front of me, "Oh I have something for you." He dug around in his pocket and pulled out a chain necklace with a small crescent moon hanging from it. He grabbed my small hands and gently placed the jewelry in my grasp.

"This- this is so you never forget me sweetie. Never forget daddy." He stroked my cheek, a tear daring to break free from his eye. He kissed my forehead and got up. He left that morning and never came back. That was the last time I saw him. That was his goodbye to me, sweet and simple. We later found out he was killed, "mauled by an animal" but even at my young age I understood. I knew who-, no, what killed him.
