I was almost at the library when I heard noises coming from the boys bathroom. No, it wasn't the sound of boys doing whatever they do like peeing in the bathroom, but it sounded like chanting. Weird and fast chanting. I quietly tip toed to the entrance to hear better. Hey, I'm a curious person!
"You can do it Jess. It's just a pair of girls that you are going to eat lunch with. Just sit there and nod at everything they say. On the count of three you are going to walk out this bathroom like a man!! One, two, three!!"
I stood there with a half amused half surprised expression. Jess was giving himself a pep talk!?? I wanted to laugh, but I felt like that would be mean.
A loud smacking sound resonated off the walls. Oh my gosh, did he just slap himself?? A loud yelp followed afterwards which confirmed my suspicions. Okay, I am not going to let this boy torture himself any more.
I took one step into the bathroom and immediately scrambled out. Holy crap it smells like crap!!! This was worse than a gas station bathroom!! I may exaggerate things, but seriously. We are talking about hundreds of un-hygienic boys that walk into this restroom.
I took a deep breath and pinched my nose. I cautiously stepped into suffocation zone.
Jess had his back turned and his head hung low. He was washing his face in the sink. When he looked up he must have noticed me in the mirror because he spun around astonished.
"Wh-what, are you d-doing here?" He stuttered.
Oh god, I have to open my mouth to talk. The fumes!!
I unclasped my fingers (instantly regretting it) from my nose and raised my eyebrows at him. "The question is what are you doing.”
He had a red mark on his cheek, where I assume he slapped himself. The redness then expanded across his entire face as he blushed. My expression softened when I realize that he was pretty serious on being nervous.
I noticed that he didn't have his glasses bridged on his nose as usual. Without them you could clearly see his eyes. They were a vibrant caramel color, tinged with yellow, almost gold looking. It reminded me of amber. He should really consider contacts.
Actually the frames took up most of his face. They were so big you didn't realize how he wasn't that bad looking (minus the clothes) He had a cute nerdy look. Call me a creep but could anyone have perfect sized ears? I had the sudden urge to tug on them…. Even though his brown hair was a bit disheveled it still looked soft and bouncy. Maybe I could make him flip his hair like Justin Bieber.
A noise that sounded like someone clearing their throat interrupted my ogling session. I probably looked like a weirdo for staring at him for so long.
"Right, well," I awkwardly started, "don't worry Jess. It's not going to be a horrible experience. Let's just get this over with. Or are you too good to be seen with me." I decided to crack a joke at the end to lighten the mood.
His lips rose into a half smile, but I could tell he still wasn't sure of himself. "I-I just don't want to make a fool of myself. I’m not use to having friends." Geez, I think I've never felt so heartfelt for a person! Jess was incredibly innocent and sweet. If I ever got him to be more confident in himself, I would make sure that he would keep those qualities.
"Trust me that you won't make a fool of yourself. Sydney is nice, and I'm already talking to you aren't I? Friends are the ones who have your back. I'm willing to be that friend. Sydney too if you just give her a chance." I really can't force him to be friends if he doesn't want to. All I can do is wait for an answer.
The bathroom held a graveyard silence as I waited for a response. Thank goodness no one has walked in here. Imagine explaining this!
Jess’s stare felt piercing. It was as if he were analyzing my every word, and peering into my soul. Finally he spoke up.
