Alaric downed another shot, letting the burning sensation of the alcohol trickling down his throat attempt to relieve the pain of not having Kelsey next to him.

He felt the sofa dip as Damon took a seat next to him, a thin sheet of paper in his large hands, "I found this stashed in a drawer. I don't know if you wanna read it or – "

Before he could finish his sentence, the letter was snatched out of his hands, Alaric's dull eyes scanning over her familiar handwriting.

Liz,

I know we're not on the best of terms so you'll probably never read this, but I can't even begin to describe how much I miss you. 2 months has gone by so quickly.

So much has happened in the time I've been away. I met a boy. He's sweet and caring and he has a good job, too.

In all honesty, I can't remember the night we met clearly, but I do know that it was by far the best night of my life.

All my love,

Kelsey

With tears in his icy blue eyes, Alaric set the thin sheet of paper down on the coffee table.

"You okay?" Damon questioned, placing a hand on his friend's shoulder.

"No," he shook his head. "No, I'm really not."
