Chapter 31 || Cry Me a River, Build a Bridge and Get Over It
"Are you okay ?", Marissa shook my arm, causing me to snap out of my thoughts.
"Yeah, I'm fine. Just a little tired.", I lied.
I couldn't tell her that I was actually thinking about Sofía because I don't want this to come off the wrong way. I'm happy with Marissa and I really like her. It's just that I haven't seen her since I told her about my plan of asking Marissa out. She hasn't been that much in contact with anyone in our group, not even Paula or Lizzie. I wonder what's going on with her...
"Has anyone of you seen Sofía ? I texted her but she hasn't answered yet.", Paula asked, tapping on her phone. I looked around the cafeteria, trying to spot her but she doesn't seem to be here.
"I really don't want to put a bee in your bonnet but I saw her talking to Jessica and I'm really worried about her. They seemed to be really friendly. I really do care about her, she is like a sister to me that's why I fear her becoming friends with her. I used to be friends with Jessica and she is so cruel.", she looked really sad and forced herself not to cry. Poor Marissa but I trust Sofía to be smart enough to not to fall for Jessica's lies.
"She treated me horribly and I don't want Sofía to go through the same as I did.", I petted her back, trying to calm her down a bit. She is so vulnerable and emotional, she really shouldn't get things like that near to her.
Everybody looked at her in sympathy except for Jackson who was occupied watching the screen of his phone in boredom. Why is he so absent ?
"Don't worry, Marissa. Sofía hates Jessica. This won't happen.", Paula looked at her in sympathy.
"I don't know.", Marissa took a deep breath. "I don't want to reflect badly on her but I heard her talking to Jessica on the phone on Monday. She said something about hating me for being with Noah and that she wants to get revenge on me. She said that you are all traitors for spending time with me and also that you'll pay for betraying her like that. I treated her like my sister and now she lets jealousy rule over her.", Jackson cocked an eyebrow at her sobbing.
He is acting pretty weird since Marissa and I are dating. His reaction when I told him was rather unenthusiastic but I thought it was because it isn't the type of person who would go all crazy about it but seems like there is something up with him.
"We can talk to her if you want to. I bet this was just a misunderstanding.", Jackson asked her, still raising one eyebrow.
"No.", Marissa responded quickly. "I don't want her to hate me more than she already does. Plus, she'll probably kill me when she finds out that I told you. I know what I heard and I understand if you don't believe me but I'm just really scared.", she continued, causing Jackson to roll his eyes. Seriously, what's wrong with him ?!
Suddenly Paula's and Lizzie's head's turned to the entrance of the cafeteria. I followed their gaze and saw Sofía and Jessica, entering the cafeteria together.
When she approached our table, everyone at our table was staring hat her in disbelief. Is Marissa right ? Maybe Jessica really did manage to manipulate her.
"Since when do you talk to Jessica ?", Lizzie asked her confusedly.
"I don't.", Sofía commented."We just happened to enter the cafeteria at the same time", she said, adjusting her top.
She is lying. I know she is because every time she lies, she is touching her clothes. I really hope she is not actually making friends with Jessica because I do care about her and I don't want her to become some part of Jessica's devious games. Denying that I don't have feelings for her would be ridiculous because I certainly do but seeing how she is acting right now makes me questioning my knowledge of human nature. Plus, I have Marissa now and Sofía doesn't have feelings for me anyway.
God, I really need to stop this, I sound like a girl.
Sofía spend the rest of lunch staring across the room and poking in her food. Normally, she would have thrown at least ten sassy comments at me but her apathetic behaviour is really starting to scare me.
After lunch, me and Jackson made our way to our classroom. First Sofía and now Jackson. Am I missing something ?
"Dude, what is wrong with you ? You spend the last fifteen minutes with nothing but looking annoyed.", I asked him.
"It's nothing.", he replied sharply. "Come on. Just tell me."
"Fine. It's about Marissa. She is just, I don't know, weird."
I gave him an irritated look. "What are you talking about ?"
"I'm talking about Marissa's performance about fifteen minutes ago. Don't you think she exaggerated a bit by nearly crying in front of the whole school.", he spat at me.
"She is just emotional. You know how fragile she is.", I said defensively.
"I don't know anything about her. What I don't know is why you didn't have the guts to tell Sofía that you like her.", I was baffled by his sharpness.
"I don't know what you are talking about. Plus, Marissa is now my girlfriend and you need to accept that."
Of course, I knew what he was talking about but I was too proud to admit that there is actually a girl on which my charm is practically useless. I tried but she has showed me too many times that she is not interested in me.
"You know exactly what I'm talking about. I'm your friend and I'll always support your decisions but that doesn't mean I have to approve of them. You are using Marissa as a filler because you have to somehow stuff the hole that Sofía has left in your ego. ", he hissed at me.
"I have never thought that I would ever experience the day when Noah Evans is too shy to get what he wants. What is wrong with both of you ? I remember the time when you couldn't stop flirting with each other and now you don't dare to look at each other anymore."
"No.", he interrupted me. "I'm not finished."
"You are like a brother to me but you are starting to annoy the shit out of me, Evans. You always have a big mouth but when you are supposed to do something, you walk away. I know that you like Sofía and that she means something to you because if not you would have just moved on to another girl long time ago."
"She does not.", I spat back.
"Oh, come on. Who even calls their girlfriend by her real name. I have never heard you calling Sofía by her name instead you were pulling that weird stuff with the nicknames and tried to get her attention by teasing her. Marissa, in fact, has to practically fight for yours. I'm your best friend so don't try to fool me. I have enough of this whole complaining. Quit being a coward and start doing something.", my jaw dropped as he let off one argument after another.
I'm not a coward. I just know when to stop fighting for something. I don't want to make a fool of myself by getting rejected by her. I'm not going to lay myself open to her like that.
"That's not true.", I retorted."Marissa is perfect."
"Maybe.", he paused.
"But is she also perfect for you ?", with that he took a turn left and vanished in one of the classrooms.
