Being jostled around on the train and then even more so on the bus was not exactly how she wanted to spend the evening but she had no choice and she was deeply relieved that it was over. The long day had been trying and doubly so because of the pain in her ankle, running around in stiletto heels for the sake of fashion had been absolute torture on her injury and she wished she hadn't done it. By the time she went to work at the hotel and she changed into more sensible shoes the damage had already been done.
She hobbled down the steps of the bus and onto the sidewalk, thankful for the warm summer night and an almost deserted High Road. As she concentrated on limping to her door she hardly noticed the figure leaning against the side of the building, but his hazel eyes narrowed on her immediately and concern etched into his handsome features
"Oh my days, Miss America, what's got you all banged about like this? Ya limpin all over the place and what not, who did this to you, I'll put em under directly ya get me?"
He caught her arm and she smiled at him as he helped her up the stairs.
"I did it to myself. Hopefully you won't put me under."
"Never that, Ma, I was just looking out for you, ya know like I do...had to make sure there was no harm come to you by way of no old man round here. I'd flip a donkey, as my Wifey would say."
"She's a lucky girl."
"Not as lucky as all that. Not really..."
His voice trailed off and Robyn noticed the heavy sigh he let out although it was quiet. She glanced at him and wished she knew him better than she did.
"I couldn't tell, wouldnt know where to start like."
"Are you alright? Are you in trouble or something?"
"Nothing for you to worry your pretty little head over, I'll always be around to take care of you Miss America." He shrugged as they made it to the front door and he chuckled a little for now she was the one looking at him in concern. "Hell if I don't know that look, same one that Kay gets on when she's on one for whatever reason innit? Well I suppose I can say this to ease ya mind a bit, there's a man about town who's none too pleased with me right now, but being the sort of blood that I am I don't have it in me to run away, and I ain't too keen on giving in to what he wants from me neither, so it's looking like its going to come down to my hand being forced in a way...ya get me?"
"Just Barely." He grinned at her as she frowned at him. "It sounds dangerous!"
"It is. I'm a bit of a dangerous bloke I suppose." He bit his lip and she tried not to faint at how gorgeous he was. She also wondered how she happened to be suddenly surrounded by the most beautiful men, not that she was complaining at all. "I'll be alright Ma, no worries. You want me to help you inside?"
"No, I think I can manage it. Thanks though. Be careful Zayn."
"I make you no promises, but I'll try."
In her harrowing and painful ascent up the stairs she ran over Zayn's words in her mind and hoped that he wasn't in as much trouble as it sounded like he was. He didn't strike her as the type to exaggerate and on the contrary it had actually seemed like he was trying to downplay what was going on.
She shook her head and wished she could help as she unlocked her door and turned on the light in her kitchen. She rummaged in the fridge for something quick to eat and had just settled on making spaghetti when a knock sounded at the door. Alex leaned himself against the door frame and smiled as soon as he caught sight of her, she grinned right back at him and for a brief moment all they did was stand there and bask in the glow of one another's smiles.
