Welcome to Santa Carla

Hello, hello there, my fine, fancy friends! Welcome to Santa Carla! Where the weather's always comfortable, the ocean is cool, and the vampires only kill you if you get in their way.

So what is it we're doing here? Why we're celebrating the 30th anniversary of The Lost Boys, that's what! Way back when, in the year 1987, when AquaNet, neon, and MTV were all the rage, a little movie about some vampires squatting in a seaside town was released. While it didn't do the greatest at the theaters (didn't do so bad, either, just wasn't a smash), The Lost Boys really hit its stride as a rental, back when you went to a video store and rented these clunky, boxy plastic pieces of viewing fun called VHS tapes. And an underground cult classic was born.

If you don't know what The Lost Boys is (how could you not???), the premise is divorcee Lucy Emerson moves herself and her two sons, Michael and Sam, to Santa Carla to start over while living with her hermit dad. Lucy gets a job at a local video store and starts dating the owner, Michael gets himself involved with a rather rough-looking crowd all for the sake of a girl, and Sam just wants to browse come comics, but ends up harassed by a couple of commando-looking kids who run the local comic shop. Unbeknownst to them they've been sucked into a web of the undead that could end up destroying them all! Dun dun dun . . .

Now it's 30 years later and we're celebrating with a behind-the-scenes book set to be released this July! Paul Davis, author of BEWARE THE MOON, a behind-the-scenes book about An American Werewolf in London, is working his magic for The Lost Boys fandom and giving us an epic 200-page book that'll feature dozens of never-before-seen photos, cast and crew interviews, and so much more. To help promote his book (and to encourage the publisher to print more, initial release is only slated for a couple thousand copies) I'm having this glorious fandom extravaganza!

From now through the end of August I'll be highlighting The Lost Boys fandom in all its glory; from fan sites to fanfic to fan art and everything in between. There will be mini-contests that'll stretch your fandom fingers for a chance to win some awesome Lost Boys prizes (original sets of press kit photos, Lost Boys-inspired lip balm, and Lost Boys-inspired books and other goodies!). And the main event? The fanfic contest, of course! The winner of that will get their very own copy of LOST IN THE SHADOWS, Paul Davis's upcoming behind-the-scenes book on The Lost Boys, signed by some of the cast and crew themselves!

I'll be posting information for all of this over the course of the coming months, so be sure to add this book to your reading list to stay up to date on all the latest and greatest this anniversary extravaganza has to offer!

In the meantime I want to spotlight you, Lost Boys fans! Have an epic piece of fan art? A fan vid? What about a fic? Is there a character from the movie you'd want to write a bio for? Then send them at me! Just shoot me an email at d.compositor [at sign] yahoo.com and get yourself included in this awesome event!

Stay tuned, kids. You don't want to miss this. Until then, you might want to stay away from the Boardwalk after it gets dark . . .
