Chapter Thirty Four: Coriolanus

You make your way down a hallway in the Donmar Warehouse. The security guard looks up at the sound of approaching footsteps and smiles when he recognizes you.

"Hi, Billie," he smiles. "Tom didn't tell me you'd be coming tonight."

"He doesn't know that I'm here. I thought I'd surprise him. Is he still getting ready?"

"Actually, he's already on stage."

"Thanks," you smile.

You navigate your way to the theater. You walk inside to see Tom doing push ups. You watch for a minute.

"That's hot," you smile.

You see him jump. He looks up from his last push up and smiles.

"I didn't know you were coming tonight!"

"It's opening night, I wasn't going to miss it!"

He gets off the floor and makes his way to greet you.

"I'd hug you," he says, "but I'm all sweaty, and, as I'm sure you smell delightful, I don't want to make you smell bad."

"I went to the hospital today," you blurt.

A look of panic and worry cross his face.

"What's wrong?" He grabs your hand. "Is everything alright? Are you sick or hu-"

"Tom," you cut him off, "I'm pregnant!"

His eyes go wide and you see the worry on his face is replaced by pure joy. His body crashes into yours as he lifts you off your feet, forgetting any worries about ruining your "delightful" smell.

"I'm going to be a dad." He sets you down and cups your face in his hands. "You're going to be a mum."

You see the tears pour from his eyes, and you gently brush them away. His lips touch your forehead.

"Are you happy, darling?" he questions.

"Yes. Yes, yes, yes," you nod.

The two of you stand there for a moment, crying. You hear footsteps and you turn to see Hadley.

"Oh, sorry. I didn't mean to interrupt anything." He backs away, obviously a little embarrassed to walk in on such an intimate moment.

"No, it's fine," Tom smiles. "We just found out that we're having a baby."

"That's great! Congratulations!" Hadley's face lights up at the news.

"Thank you," you beam, gripping Tom's hand tightly.

Tom turns back to you. "I'm sorry, love, but I need to get backstage. I'll see you after the show, okay?"

You nod and kiss him goodbye.

The show was fantastic. You laughed, you cried, you were jealous. Tom looked at you more than once during the performance. The only time you noticed him intentionally avoiding your eyes was when he was kissing Birgitte. By the end of the show, you're sobbing in your seat. The people around you look concerned as they leave, but you assure them you're fine. You sit in the empty room for a minute, until Tom comes to find you.

"Darling? Are you alright?" He rushes to your seat and kneels down in front of you.

"That was sad, Tom."

"Bea, you knew that was going to happen. You read through the script with me a million times."

"I just watched my husband die!"

"You watched the character that your husband plays die, but it wasn't me."

"It's hard to tell the difference when the character looks exactly like the man I fell in love with."

"I'm sorry. I guess that makes sense. Please don't cry. Other than that, how was it?"

You wipe away tears from your eyes. "It was wonderful. I loved it. There was one part that I didn't like, though."

"What was that?" he frowns.

"You looked like you were enjoying that kiss with Birgette more than a married man should," you say sternly.

He chuckles and kisses your hand. "Acting, darling. What about the kiss with Hadley? Did that bother you?"

"No, I quite enjoyed that part, actually."

He rolls his eyes and gets off of the floor.

"Let's go out to celebrate. Maybe get a nice glass of wine?"

"Babe, I'm pregnant. I can't drink."

"Right, sorry. I almost forgot," he laughs.

"That's comforting. You're already forgetting that there's a baby inside of me."

"I said I almost forgot."

"You asked me to get drinks with you. You forgot."

"Sorry," he says again.

"Mmm. Mr. Sorry," you smile, leaning into his embrace.

"Mr. Sorry?"

"You apologize for everything."

"Do I? Sorry." He realizes he did again. "Sorry!"

"Tom, you're going to hurt yourself," you laugh.

"Mhm," he hums, as though keeping his mouth shut is the only way to avoid apologizing.

It probably is.
