"I was wrong... I was wrong all along..." Jaiden bowed his head solemnly, the great tome crashing to the floor. A cloud of dust rose as he sank to his knees.
"I'm sorry Mother, I... I have shamed you, and our family..." he slowly lifted his chin to lock eyes with the woman.
She knelt beside her son, carefully tucking the folds of her skirts beneath her as she went.
"My son... Jaiden... I could not blame you. This book, its powers, they consume anyone within its reach," she gently placed a hand on his shoulder, "It is only a sign of your strength that we are both still here now."
"But Mother, the things I have done!" he paused, then quieter, "The people I have killed. Father... Ellyn..."
Tears began to well up in his eyes, one broke free and left a shining trail down his cheek.
"All for some frivolous power..."
