Chapter 1 - Auburn

"Kids?" I hear my mom shout from our new kitchen in our new house in our new town. Our really tiny new town. Tiny and quiet. I'm pretty sure that if I concentrated hard enough I'd probably be able to hear my new neighbor's conversations. But I'm not gonna do that. I'm not a weirdo.

"Yes mama?" me and my twin brother Reece shout back at the same time, I'm really starting to believe him on the whole twin instincts. Not that I'd ever admit that to him. No never. His ego is already big enough.

"Come here please, you know I don't like shouting like some crazy lady" That is very true, she hates it in fact, she's a very calm, quiet person.

"Coming" we shout at the same time again. As I exit my room the same time Reece is also coming out of his room next door to mine. The house has a really cool layout, when you walk in the front door, there's a little foyer, to the right of it is the kitchen - very modern but also rustic looking, with an island – across the kitchen is the living-room, to the left side of the foyer is the dining room, and a little study next to it, and a bathroom at the end of the hall, where the stairs also are. On the second floor there's a long hallway – and a big bay window - with two bedrooms on either side and one at the end of the hall. Each bedroom has its own little bathroom and walk in closet.

"So you believe me on the twin-stincts now? Come on sis, I know you do" he says with a knowing smirk. I ignore his question and ask one of my own

"So? You enjoying all the quiet around here? Certainly gonna take me a while to get used to it" New Orleans was so loud and busy, even more so because our apartment was in the French Quarter

"I'm definitely not used to it, but it ain't all bad. Embrace the new and unknown baby girl"

"Where'd ya get that? Candy wrapper?"

"Hardy har sis, Facebook actually" I really regret showing him how Facebook works; we were all happier and saner before he joined. He's an addict. Even if I only showed him like a week ago, so that he could keep in touch with his football buddies from FQH – French Quarter High.

"Oh goody, no more shoutin''' My mom says as we enter the kitchen

"What up mama?" Reece asks

"I don't know if ya'll saw that lady that lives across from us? Well anyways she invited us to dinner tonight, apparently some new folks moved in next door to them 'bout a week ago, we're all gon have some dinner together." Me and Reece look at each other then back to mom then back to each other when mom adds "There'll be some other kiddo's too." Wow, cause that makes it so wonderful!

"Do we have to?" I ask with a grimace. Mom knows I don't do well in social settings

"Yes baby girl, I already told Sally were coming" I hear Reece groan next to me and I look up at him as he looks at me.

"Fine" We groan at the same time "See twin-stincts!" Reece exclaims happily, to which I roll my eyes. Never will I admit it. Never!

"When?" I ask

"Well, right now..." Mom answers with a slight grimace

"What?" Reece and I screech at the same time, and he gives me a grin that says "see twin-stincts" by the amount of times I've rolled my eyes at that, I'm surprised my eyes haven't completely rolled back into my head.

"But we're still unpackin'" I say pleadingly

"I'll help you both tomorrow and no chores for a week?"

"Sold!" Reece says happily, only cause he hates doing chores.

"Okay whatever" I agree, not cause I want to, I just don't want to stay here alone. This house actually creeps me out a little bit, maybe because it's bigger than our old apartment, or maybe because I'm just not used to it yet. Creeped out nonetheless

"Thanks' kiddo's" Mom gushes "let's go"

"I was hopin' she wasn't serious about going right now" I whisper to Reece as we walk out the front door and across the street

"Yeah me either. But I guess we're meetin' us some new people baby girl"

"Oh joy, just when I was tryin' and succeeding to avoid the human race" I mumble to myself just before mom whacks me upside the head and says "I expect you two to be nice and actually interact with the other kids, don't go being shy and all that, specially you baby girl" looking pointedly at me.

"What about Reece?" I say and point to my brother

"Oh, sweetie, why would mama be worried 'bout me, I'm a delight where there's people involved." Reece says mockingly. But it's actually true; he's a real ol' social bug. Me? Yeah no. I'd rather go back to sit in Mrs. Conley's class – my fifth grade math teacher. She used to flick my ears whenever she walked by my desk and always called me to solve the problems. I never solved them.

"Please don't tell me you're thinking of Mrs. Conley's class? You know she'll probably still flick your ears" Reece says as mom rings the doorbell. Oh my dear ol' big brother knows be so well. It's already dark out so I hope we won't be long. I still have a bunch of boxes I want, no need, to unpack before Monday. And I'm really hoping there aren't too many people here.
