. . .
"I see someone is excited," the grandmother commented at her grandson who was sporting that smile since he woke up an hour ago. "Youngjae-ah," she called, "Seat here first," instructing to the chair she pulled.
The young man placed the utensils on the plate before complying. Tilting his head, Sunhwa chuckled, patting his cheek, "I'm glad you've learned how to smile again." He smiled even brighter at her to which she squeezed his cheeks, "Is this because of someone you like?"
Eyes rounding, he immediately shook his head indicating a no, taking his phone out from his pocket, he typed once again, "I'm just happy I'm here with you, Halmeoni."
"Geojisbureong," then, they heard the ring of the doorbell. (Lie)
Youngjae unlatched himself from her and proceeded to the door. Sunhwa giggled when she saw him fix himself first before opening the door and walking towards the gate to open it up for the visitors.
"Good morning, Halmeoni," Wonhye bowed diligently, her brother following her action.
"Oh, is this Joohyun?" She slowly sat on the couch to level the young boy. Joohyun greeted her softly a 'good morning'. "It's good to see you, handsome," she smiled before turning to the elder sister, "How long has he been sick?"
"It's been three days, I think. He was sick when I came home the other day," then she noticed Youngjae taking Joohyun's bag inside a room. "Jae-ah, he could just stay here," she called.
Sunhwa responded when her grandson continued to put the bag inside his room, "Nah, just let him be, he prepared his room for this handsome boy."
"His room?" She echoed, eyes rounding. "Omo, this is so embarrassing," she mumbled to herself, rubbing the back of her neck.
"It's alright, darling. He should be comfortable so he'll be fine soon, right boy?" Within a few minutes of seeing the little boy, it's really evident that the grandmother was fond of him. Who would not? Joohyun looks so adorable with those chubby cheeks and almond eyes.
After reminding her younger brother to behave and be a good boy, she finally got her backpack, "Halmeoni, Youngjae-ah, I'll be going now."
Youngjae closed the gate behind him a little too rough to catch up with her that got her attention.
"Where are you going?"
Too lazy to type on his phone, he just pointed out to the street leading towards the bus stop. She could only just nod her head, wrapping her scarf securely around her neck, while the former matched steps with her.
Wonhye hummed, trying to formulate words in her mind, and Youngjae's eyes would widen in curiosity. And they kept like that until they reached the bus stop.
Rubbing her nape, she started, "I'll be dropping at your house after my shift."
.
"What time does noona usually go home, Joohyunnie?" Halmeoni asked as she set up the table for dinner while the little boy watched a Ben 10 movie on the TV.
It was darker now outside and without looking at the clock, one could determine it was already eight o'clock in the evening. Although security isn't a problem in their hometown, still it isn't good to be out there especially for an alone and vulnerable female.
"Halmeoni," Joohyun called softly, pointing at the figure nine magnetized on the refrigerator. Even he can't tell time yet, he is observant enough to compare the number from the clock and the magnet on the fridge. "Noona goes home this time," then he smiled weakly.
"Really, boy?"
So after, they had eaten dinner, Youngjae was sent to fetch Wonhye from her workplace—only to come cross her at the bus stop. His face lightened up, "Hey, you're out?" She asked.
"I came to pick you up. Halmeoni was worried."
She looked up at him after reading his response. She blushed out of embarrassment, "Oh, I'm sorry. I forgot to tell you I usually go home late from work."
"We should get you a phone, really," he knew it'll take a little more pursuing to make her agree, learning she had to pawn her phone for money but she never had redeem it. "It's more convenient that way. We can contact each other."
"Some things are more important than a phone," was all she responded.
Arriving home, Sunhwa was the first person to greet her. She had a worried look on her face that seemed to make her look more aged than she actually was. Wonhye was sorry for the worry she had caused and reassured her that she was fine.
"All right," the old woman sighed, "Now, have you eaten dinner? I'm sure you have not. Come on; take a seat while I'll go warm your dinner."
Before Sunhwa can proceed to the kitchen, she pulled her hand gently, hugging her second later, "Thank you, Halmeoni. You don't know how grateful I am right now."
It was just a delivery that binds them before, then—her lone and silent grandson came and befriended him, now—it seemed like she and Joohyun found a family in them.
"Noona?"
"You'll stay for the night, right?" Sunhwa asked, hopeful she will take the offer. If she wasn't easy, then she could always use the J-word to make her stay. "It's too late, not too friendly for a girl and a little boy and besides, Joohyun likes it here, right?" There's the word!
"Well," she stammered, craning her head to the two people enjoying each other's company at the living room. Joohyun's eyes turned into a line after Youngjae made a face at him. A smile tugged from the corner of her lips, "If it isn't too much of a burden?" She giggled.
"Oh, nonsense!"
In the middle of the night, Youngjae was woken up with a sound of someone singing—from the balcony? Wait, everyone should be asleep right now. It's two o'clock in the morning still!
"Oh, you scared me," it was Wonhye, clutching her chest, surprised—shocked of a sudden appearance of Youngjae beside her. "Did I wake you up?"
He shook his head, slyly smiling. He took the pen and wrote on her paper, "Do you mind if I listen to your song?"
"If I mind?" Youngjae blinked before standing up to take his leave but she pulled her down, chuckling, "I was kidding." He frowned and pouted, "Don't go all cute on me, Choi Youngjae."
He wanted to protest that he isn't cute—and wait, it should be him who's quite upset at her for making fun of him, right? But he kept that to himself when she started humming, tapping her pencil against the cold tile.
When he heard her voice, it was one of the most beautiful voices he had heard in his life. He was tempted to sing with her, to find that person in him who loves singing the most—to find that inspiration within without hurting thinking about her, Jaemi.
And as if he heard her whisper, 'Sing Youngjae-ah,' he found himself singing with her. Wonhye was surprised, her voice slowly turning down to hear him clearer. To say, she loves his voice was an understatement.
"And like that I end the call."
