Chapter 33

I woke one morning to see everyone still sleeping. I got dressed in my robes and went downstairs to wait for Elizabeth. I plopped down on the couch by the roaring fire.

I sat and waited. I heard footsteps coming down the stairs, and I expected Elizabeth, but John came down instead.

"What do you want?" I said, standing up.

"You're following me around all day." He said, walking over to me.

"I have been following you around for the past two months. It's been longer than I agreed too! People are starting to think I'm strange."

"They already think you're strange!" John snapped at me. "You came from Hogwarts at the worst time, towards the end of the year! You show up and you are very secretive, you don't talk to anyone other than Elizabeth..."

"I'm talking to you now, aren't I?"

"That's not the point!" John said. "We've known something bad was going to happen to Ilvermorny, and you're it!"

In anger, I looked into John's eyes. All his thoughts flooded into mine.

"You don't think I'm strange." I said. "You fancy me, that's why you want me to follow you around!"

"What is that supposed to mean?"

"You have feelings for me you twit."

John sat speechless.

"H-how did you figure that out?" He stuttered.

"I saw it!" I said. "I can read minds!"

Elizabeth came down the stairs and I walked over to her.

"Let's go to the Great Hall." I said, staring at John.

"Well someone's eager this morning." Elizabeth said.

We walked from the common room and left John alone standing by the fire.

Elizabeth and I sat at the end of the long Thunderbird table. I silently ate as I listened to Elizabeth babble on about God knows what. She punched my shoulder and pointed up.

"Ow what the hell was that for?" I said, looking up and holding my arm.

"The mail is coming!" She said.

"The what?" I said, not hearing her over all the commotion.

Just then, owls flooded the hall. They landed at the tables and dropped letters and newspapers on the table. An owl holding a letter in its beak landed in front of Elizabeth and she smiled.

"It's a letter from my mom!" Elizabeth said as she ripped open the envelope. "She hasn't written to me since she got that new job at MCUSA."

I nodded, then saw an owl flying to me. It was a snowy owl, and I smiled because I realized it was Harry's owl Hedwig.

Hedwig dropped a letter in front of my plate and I picked it up.

"Thank you Hedwig." I said. She then flew off, most likely back to Harry.

"Who's that from?" Elizabeth asked.

"It's from my friends back at Hogwarts." I said. "I really do miss them."

"Well open it!" She said, setting her own letter down.
