Chapter Twenty Three: Announcement

"What if they don't like me? I mean, we've been in the media a little bit, but as soon as the engagement hits the news everything will go crazy. I'm just so afraid that your fans are going to hate me," you say into the phone.

"Darling, they'll love you. Besides, I'm not marrying them, I'm marrying you."

"That's what I'm afraid of. What if they hate me because you're getting married?"

"They're my fans, I think they want me to be happy. They want me to find someone who I want to spend the rest of my life with, and that's you. If they realize that fact, then they'll love you as much as I do."

You sigh. "I suppose you're right."

"I wish I was with you right now. What are you doing?"

"Lying in bed, talking to you before I go to sleep."

"What time is it there?"

"Nearly midnight."

"Maybe I should let you go to bed. I know you're catching a flight to Iowa tomorrow. I don't want you to be tired in the morning."

"I'm always tired in the morning. It doesn't matter what time I go to bed. We can't all wake up feeling amazing like you, now can we?"

"Mmm, I'm not feeling so great right now."

"What's wrong, Tom?"

"I've got a terrible headache. It doesn't help that I'm missing you."

"We'll see each other in a few days. You still plan on coming to the farm, right?"

"Of course. I wouldn't miss it for the world. Have you told your parents about the engagement yet?"

"No, I want to do it in person. Of course, that means that I won't be wearing my ring for the majority of tomorrow. It's going to feel so strange not wearing it. Have you told anyone?"

"Just my parents and my sisters."

"Mhm. You haven't told Chris?" you ask, referring to Hemsworth.

"Well...maybe I told him," he laughs. "I didn't want you to be upset that I told anyone else."

"Babe, I'm not upset. What did he say?"

"He laughed and said he wasn't surprised."

"So, what did your family say?" you ask quietly, nervous of getting their approval.

"Darling, they love you. You don't need to worry about anything. If anyone needs to worry, it should be me."

"Why should you be nervous?"

"Because you have a much bigger family than me. What if they decide that I'm not the right person for their precious Billie?"

"Then they'll have to get over it. But Tom, you really don't need to worry about anything. My family loves you."

"They've only met me a few times, how can you be sure?"

"Stop worrying. It'll be fine."

"I'm so glad you're home, Billie!" your mom almost sings as she walks into the living room carrying a plate of cookies.

"You didn't make me cookies when I came home from college!" Charlie accuses from his spot next to you on the couch. He's home for summer break.

"That's because the college campus is only a forty-five minute drive from here."

"Or it's because you're not special enough," Katie jokes from where she sits on the floor.

"Katie! Be nice," your mom scolds.

You and your sister look at each other and try to hide your smiles.

"So, Bills, what did you want to tell us?" your dad asks, sitting down in his recliner.

"Oh. Right. Well, I'm not really sure how to say this..."

"Is everything alright? You're not hurt are you? Oh my, please don't tell me you're pregnant!" your mom worries out loud.

"No, no, no! Nothing's wrong. In fact, it's just the opposite," you take a deep breath. "Tom asked me to marry him."

"No way!" Katie squeaks excitedly.

Your mom gasps and nearly jumps out of her seat.

"Congratulations, sweetheart," your dad smiles.

"Why would he want to marry you?" Charlie asks, but you see a smile fighting at his lips.

"There's this thing called love. I wouldn't expect you to understand." You roll your eyes.

"When are you going to tell Tom's fans?" Katie bounces excitedly.

"Actually, Tom's going to announce it during an interview tomorrow. That's actually the reason I came home today. Partially because I wanted to tell you all before it hits the news, and also, because I don't want to be in LA when he tells everyone. I don't want to be around any chaos."

Your phone's been going crazy since the interview aired almost two hours ago. Friends and family have been calling, texting, sending you messages on Facebook. Twitter's exploding with messages from Tom's fans. Most of them are happy about the news, but you've read a few tweets that you wish you hadn't.

Your phone rings for the millionth time in the last two hours, and you look at the caller. It's finally the call you've been waiting for.

"Hello, darling." You hear when you answer.

"How's it going on your end?"

"You'd think it was just announced that I was going to be crowned queen," you laugh.

"Well you are." You can hear the smile in his voice.

"Mmm. You're so charming. Stop it," you laugh.

"Why would I do that? You wouldn't love me if it wasn't for my charm."

"Wanna bet? There's more to you than your charm."

"Darling, I'm afraid I must go. They're calling my plane. We'll continue this arguement later. I'll see you tomorrow."

"I love you."

"I love you."

There's a soft knock on your bedroom door and you look up from the book you're reading. Tom's standing in the doorway, holding a bouquet of flowers.

"Tom! When did you get here?" You leap off the bed and rush into his arms. Your mom was supposed to tell you when he got here.

"Just now," he says before leaning down and kissing you. "Love, please remind me that the next time you offer to pick me up at the airport, I should take it."

"I don't want to drive through Iowa without anyone to talk to again."

"The corn?"

"The corn. Don't get me wrong, I love Iowa, probably because you love Iowa, but honestly, the drive seems much longer than it should be. There's nothing but corn to look at."

"Well you should be looking at the road, not the scenery."

He pulls you back to your bed and the two of you collapse onto the mattress.

"So, what did your family say?" You hear the nervous tone in his voice as he pulls you close to him.

"They're so happy. They love you, Tom. Almost as much as I do."

He sighs in relief. "So your brothers aren't going to threaten me? No "if you hurt her" scenarios?"

"Oh, I never said that," you wink. "I just said that my family likes you. If you break my heart, they might throw you in a lake. Or worse."

"I'll keep that in mind," he smiles.
