Reaching for the Stars

Reaching out a trembling hand,
I dialed the interphone.

It was but a weak attempt at slowing down the process taking place
at a higher level.

Beep-
            Beep-
                          Beep-

No answer.
Try again.

"What?!" A husky voice came through. "Who are you and what do you want?"

I made no reply and waited intently,
with my ears close to the speaker,
vainly hoping to catch at least one sound,
one wail,
one request.

But nothing came trough
and static ruled over the room.
