Chapter 7 | | Actions before Words
I closed my book and exhaled. Oh my God. I can finally leave and never talk to him again. Well, I do not really believe that this will actually work out but I'll do my best. I packed my stuff into my bag when suddenly the door opened.
"Hey sweetheart, do you want to stay for dinner?", his mom peeked through the slightly opened door.
"Ahm..I-uh...", I tried to answer not even sure what to say.
I really do not want to stay here it has been really awkward since I heard Noah's little conversation with Eddy. I really wish I haven't. I do not know what to think and question every word that comes out of his mouth. I cannot see past his little mask which is really infuriating. Normally, I can judge someone somehow and I know what to expect from them, but Noah, Noah is as transparent as a rock.
"Sure, she stays.", he winked at me.
Exactly. This is exactly what I mean. In one moment, he does not like me and then he winks at me. Ugh. Get it together.
"I'm sorry Olivia, but I really do need to go home. It is already late and my mom expects me to be home.", I smiled at her, trying not to appear rude.
"Oh, such a shame. Maybe, next time.", she closed the door and I stood up, grabbed my phone and went towards his door.
"Where are you going ?", he asked me, raising his eyebrow.
"Home?", I responded confused
"Alone? Let me drive you. It is already dark outside."
"No, I'll be fine. I can walk.", I said and left the room without giving him the chance to reply.
His house is just a 20 minute walk from mine. I really like walking through the streets at night. The beautiful stars shining, the chilly wind floating through your hair. The sky is actually pretty clear today which makes it possible for the stars to unfold their splendour. The street was empty. Not a single car driving by. I wish, I could do that more often but sadly it is not safe enough for a seventeen year old girl to wander around late at night.
All of a sudden, I heard a car, driving up from behind. I could hear that it slowed down until it was slowly driving right next to me. The window went down.
"How much?", a familiar voice asked.
I turned around and saw Kyle sitting in the car and started laughing.
"Hey, Kyle. Nice to see you too."
Kyle is one of the most popular boys at school and he is really cool, despite some other popular people. We've sat next to each other in Spanish AP since junior year. We somehow became friends but due to the fact that we belong to different social groups, we do not really spend time together outside from school. He is really attractive and the girls drool over him like dogs over meat which is really funny because he is not really into girls, let's just put it like that. He haven't had his coming-out yet but when we had to do a Spanish project together which we were supposed to do at his house. Apparently he forgot about it and I caught him making out with his boyfriend in his bed. Believe me, that was the most awkward situation I have ever had been in and I promised him not to tell anyone which was kind of the story how our "friendship" started. I guess that having a secret with someone, really does cause you to grow closer.
"Come on. Hop in my car. I'll drive you home. It is not safe for a pretty girl like you to be out at such a late hour.", he said and pulled over and I got in the car.
"Why are you waking alone on the streets at 9 p.m.?", he asked me, cocking an eyebrow.
"I was at Noah's. We had to do an English project together.", I replied and looked out of the window.
"And he lets you walk home ? Alone ? At night ? What an asshole."
"No, I wanted to walk home.", he looked at me in confusion. "Why would you do that?"
"Because...because I like walking", I replied unconvincing.
"Yeah, sure. I'm gay, not stupid. Just tell me what is wrong."
"Ugh. Fine.", I said and told him everything that has happened so far. From the moment we ran into each other until now.
"You like him, don't you?", he asked me with a smirk.
"Uh, no? I just hate it when people act like this. Like, please do me a favour and decide whether you like me or not. I'm fine with both of it, just try not to get on my nerves. I hate this ugly game playing."
"Then join this little game and show him that you are not one to mess with. I mean since you do not like him, you should not care about his feeling."
"I would but I'm really not good at this. I just want to finish and leave school. I really don't need any drama and I would not also have to deal with Noah but with Jessica and I would rather die than having her harassing me every day.", I said annoyed.
"Anyways, from what you have told me I believe that he likes you, I don't know to what extent but he does."
"I beg to differ, Kyle. Haven't you heard me talking about his conversation with Eddy ? He clearly does not like me.", I said with my "duh"-voice.
"This is exactly what all of you girls do wrong. Stop that!", he exclaims, causing me to frown.
"What are you talking about?"
"The mistake every girl does when it comes to guys is that they do rather believe in what guys say and not what they do. That is what causes you to believe that he does not like you and other girls to believe that a boy likes them. Pay attention to what he does and not what he says. Look behind the façade.", he explained
We reached my house and he parked the car in front of my house.
"There is only one way to find out if he likes you or not: make him jealous. Talk to other guys and see what happens and I mean pay attention how he reacts and not what he tells you because he won't come up and tell you: "I'm jealous. Please stop.", he formed exclamation marks with his fingers.
"Yeah, whatever. I'll see.", I shook my head.
"I can help you if you want to. Just seeing us talk would cause him to fume. You know, my motto is "I'm gay and always ready for the fray.", he saluted and winked at me which caused me to laugh.
I gave him a hug, got out of the car and went to the door, rummaging around in my bag to find my keys.
I guess Kyle is right. I need to find out what is going on and because Noah obviously won't tell me, I need to find it out by myself...
