Vaira Ekaterina and her twin brother Jarek were no older then six when the Uprising took their mother from them. Being Warlock children, no one cared about them. No one would take them in or help them in any way. They were seen as trash in the eyes of the Shadowhunters and none of the Downworlders cared.
They lived on the streets for years living off of scraps and whatever they could steal off the shelves of the stores around town. They did their best to stay out of trouble, but sometimes trouble just had a way of finding them...
"And what are you two doing out here?" A man said walking into the ally Vaira and Jarek were in.
Jarek stood from his spot next to his sister. "We don't want any trouble." He said, his voice thick with a Russian accent.
The man stepped into the light and revealed his dark scarred runes. Shadowhunter. "I don't think I really care what you want." He said taking out his glowing sereph blade.
"We're not doing anything wrong." Vaira said standing up as well.
"As far as I'm concerned, you just being alive is wrong. It's insulting to have to breath the same air as low life's like you."
"That is way out of line! If you even lay a hand on one of us you'll be breaching the accords, the accords that your kind came up with." Jarek said sternly.
"Those accords shouldn't even have been thought of, let alone signed."
"If you really wish, we can leave." Vair offered, buy the shadowhunter scoffed and a booming chuckle roared from his lips.
"You really think I'm just gonna let you go? Soon enough your entire kind will be extinct."
"I can guarantee that we won't go down without a fight."
She grabbed her brother's hand. "We should just get out of here, it's not worth it, Jarek." She whispered to him.
"I'm not going anywhere. This creep is going to get it."
Jarek let go of his sisters hand and started to make his way towards the man but froze in his tracks when two more came around the corner.
"What the hell is this?!" Vair exclaimed.
"We're just tired of you people doing whatever you want."
"We live on the streets. If we did whatever we wanted do you honestly think we would be here now?" The boy asked.
"Enough talking, I'm so done with this."
The other two pulled out their blades as well. That was when they knew the fight had to begin. Vaira and Jarek rushed at them, their hand blaring a bright red and sliver. It had always been like that. A mixture of the two colors when every other warlock they had met only had one.
They battled back and forth until one of the men had caught her and held their blade to her throat.
Jarek stopped at this sight and was so distracted that he didn't see one of the hunters coming right for him.
"Jarek watch out!" She screamed.
He didn't get the chance to look in time and the silver blade pierced through his chest.
The hunter took his sword out of his body and Jarek dropped to the ground.
Vaira froze. Everything around her started moving in slow motion. Suddenly her mind went blank and a shriek ripped through her.
When Vaira opened her eyes the men were laying either dead or unconscious around her. She stood and ran over to her brother's body pulling him into her lap. Tears pored down from her eyes.
"Jar, wake up! Get up! You can't leave me, you're all I have!" She sobbed. "Don't leave me... I need you." Vair's words came out slow and quietly.
Jarek's figure was cold already. His facial features stiffened, but she knew he was gone.
More hunters came that must have been in the area. They looked at the scene in front of them. Three mangled bodies and a girl who was crying over a boy that she had pulled into her lap.
"Miss, who did this?" One of the men asked her in a kinder tone then the ones that now laid on the ground had.
"I-I think I did..." She responded. "They killed my brother. We didn't even do anything." Vaira sobbed.
Another man came up behind her and pulled her arms behind her back. She didn't have it in her to fight anymore. He cuffed her wrists and brought her to her feet.
"Wait, my brother! I can't leave him!" Vair screamed.
"Miss, you have to come with us. He's gone."
"I can't just leave him! He's my twin... He's all I have left."
"We will take care of him."
And that is how Vaira's life began it's spiral into it's massive hatred for Shadowhunters.
