Chapter 157—Never Again

Raine

Anxiety flowed through me hard and strong when I returned to our suites to find Cage missing. What the hell was I going to do now? I didn't have time to contemplate further, because the door flew open and he strode inside. I flinched when he slammed it shut behind him.

He reached the bedroom in three steps. I thought I would be happy to see him, but the look on his face caused my stress level to skyrocket. His expression was fierce, livid, his eyes dark pools of fury. I sank down on the edge of bed and stared at him without saying a word.

He glared at me and then paced the room. It reminded me of the day I had run from him and he found me in the forest. He had been angry with me that day. But not nearly as angry as this.

He came to an abrupt halt and spun to face me. A vein in his neck pulled taut, the muscles in his chest rippled with tension. His words were clipped and cold, "What. The. Fuck. Happened?"

I shuddered. This was not how I envisioned this conversation to go. I had already been dreading it, dreading the thought of telling him what I had done. And now, it was a thousand times worse...all because I hadn't given him enough credit. I hadn't given him enough faith that he could have handled it sooner.

My face fell. My heart was breaking. Tears rolled down my cheeks as I whispered, "I'm sorry."

"What exactly are you sorry for?" he snapped. "Forgetting to mention that little detail I had a child who died, or setting me up to look like a fool with your boyfriend?"

My blood turned cold. I gasped, "You can't think that!"

"I can't think what?!" he demanded, fire in his eyes. He took a step toward me. I shrank back from his fury. He spat, "You told me yourself...you loved him. I was the fool for not taking you seriously."

He turned his back on me and strode toward the living room. I couldn't let him leave. Not like this. I darted around him and planted myself in front of the door. He ground to a stop and growled, "Move!"

"No!" I replied defiantly, my arms spread open, holding each side of the door frame.

He narrowed his eyes. His voice lowered dangerously, "Then I will move you out of my way."

My own anger flared. "Threatening me isn't going to get you anywhere!" I hissed. "I have already screwed this up enough by not talking to you. So now, so help me, you will sit your ass down and hear what I have to say!"

The fire in his eyes increased to near volcanic capacity. His pupils were completely dilated. His nostrils flared as he stepped right in my face, his body so close, I could feel the heat coming from his skin. His tone was quiet and deadly, "Don't tell me what the fuck I need to do."

I shuddered from head to toe. Maybe anger wasn't the best way to convince him to stay and listen. His fury far outweighed mine right now. I touched his chest, but he stepped out of my reach. I flinched at his rebuff, but he wasn't trying to get out the door, so I would take what I could get. "Please...please just hear what I have to say," I begged him.

His lips pursed into a thin line. He crossed his arms over his chest and waited.

Even though he wasn't rushing the door, I thought it best to stay where I was planted. But now that he was silently glaring, waiting for me to explain, I stumbled over my thoughts again. Where did I start? I guessed there was no place to start but the beginning. I took a deep breath. "After you...died," I hesitated, painful memories washing over me. But I couldn't stop. Not till I had told him everything. I sucked in another breath and continued, "Marku put me in chains in a cell."
