Quentin had noticed something was off during study group, but he wasn't sure at first what it was. When Kady went to get another crystal for the spell, Penny's sly smile told him everything he didn't want to know.
"She's still mad?" Julia asked.
"She'll get over it," Penny said.
Quentin's pencil snapped in half.
The mirror flashed, and the figure of a man in a suit stepped out, a buzzing cloud of moths where his head ought to be.
"That's not what's supposed to happen," Alice said, frowning at the spellbook. Quentin tried to reply but his throat was closing, and as Julia leapt toward him, calling his name, his vision blacked out.
