Chapter 02 | Late Night Jokes
The sound of my phone vibrating woke me up from my deep sleep. I checked the time on the alarm clock sitting on the cabinet next to my bed. Who would be calling me at two in the morning?
"Hello?" I muttered incoherently, trying to keep my eyes open.
"I need help with the homework," a frustrated husky voice spoke.
"Raysen?" I mumbled.
"The one and only."
I pushed my comforter to the side of my bed, exposing my body to the cold breeze. The bright light from my lamp burned my eyes, ruining the nice pitch blackness of my room. I groaned, trying to let my eyes adjust to the light. I could hear a faint yelling of a man and woman in the background of Raysen's call.
"You needed my help at two in the morning?" I complained trying to clear my throat from morning phlegm. That was not attractive at all. His voice gets to sound hot and sexy while mine makes me sound like a dying whale.
"Please, it's just one problem," he begged. Why was he doing his homework so late?
I sighed heavily, walking towards my backpack to grab the homework I worked on before bed. He just had to wake me up from my dream of marrying Zac Efron. Our wedding was going to be beautiful and grand, but no, Raysen's life had to come first.
"What question?" I yawned, waking up Ollie, who ran up to me, licking my ankle.
"Forty-four. I got B equals 26," he stated, unsure if his answer was correct.
"That's right," I answered lazily, ready to hang up the phone.
The loud cheering on the other line made me bolt up from my half asleep and half awake state. "I got it right!" Raysen's sexy voice chortled. I couldn't help but giggle at the sudden outburst of happiness he got from answering a question correctly. "Are we done?" I asked still laughing at his overwhelming joy.
"Wait, hold on," he stopped me before I could end the call.
"What now?" I complained wanting to get more sleep before the sun rose. I shoved my homework back in my blue folder and climbed back into my cream-colored comforter with Ollie trailed behind me. He sat on my lap forcing me to give him belly rubs.
"You're so spoiled," I snickered at Ollie.
"I beg to differ. I'm fresher than febreeze," Raysen objected, playfully, on the other line.
"I wasn't talking to you, I was talking to my dog."
"Well, at least I know we're both cute,"
"And that you're both needy." I retorted, snickering at my comeback.
"Well played," he congratulated. "What are you doing right now, baby cakes?" he asked trying to make small talk. I giggled at his nickname for me.
What was he trying to do?
Baby cakes? Really?
"Lying down in bed," I replied seductively, holding back my laughter, trying to play along with his little game.
"Wearing what?" his husky voice asked. I pulled the phone away and snickered at his comical question, deciding to tease him to see what else he had to say.
"Nothing," I replied with a stern voice, trying not to make any noise, so I wouldn't wake up the entire neighborhood. The line went silent knowing that I had stunned the boy on the other side of the phone.
"Really?" Raysen's voice filled with curiosity. I could mentally sense his lips curving into a smirk.
I buried my face in the nearest pillow and started laughing. "Really?" I tried my best to imitate him, "No, perv. I was just kidding!" I yelled into the speaker. Ollie jumped off of my lap because of all the ruckus I was making.
"Hey, that wasn't nice," he retorted.
"No?" I tested him, enjoying the fun I was having teasing Mr. Popular.
"Nope, you don't string guys along like that," he advised. I snorted at his witty comeback.
Did he really think that I haven't seen his multiple break ups with the cheerleaders in front of Mr. Riley's class? I always thought about the pain the girls felt when he did that to them. The feeling of being used hurt like hell and nobody deserves that. Especially not the girls Raysen used only for their bodies.
"You're one to be talking," I muttered to myself.
"What was that?" he pestered me once more.
"Do you just go up to random girls, give them pet names, and hit on them thinking that you'll get every last one on this planet?" I teased him curious to see what he would say back.
"What can I say? The ladies just find me charming and irresistible," he confidently stated.
'Wow,' I mouthed the words as I found it quite interesting to see someone very self-possessed. I was never as assertive as he was. Maybe I could learn a few things from this boy.
"Charming and irresistible," my voice lowered mimicking him. I giggled, laughing at how accurate my imitation of him was. He let out an irritated sigh, probably thinking how such a small quiet girl who sat in the back of the class was right now, at this very moment, teasing the captain of the football team.
He really needed to rethink his life choices.
What can I say? I'm not myself when you call me at this time of night.
"I'm hanging up now," he answered, clearly irritated and tired.
"Wait, hold on," I protested, desperately wanting to ask him one more question. I swore this would be the last question of the night before I fell back to my well-deserved sleep. This is the least he could do for waking me up in the middle of the night.
"What?" he grumbled bringing the phone back up to his ear waiting for me to speak.
"I have to ask you something," I paused, "It's serious."
This caught his attention."What is it?" his husky voice questioned.
I let out a deep sigh, pondering if I should ask him this question or not. I was certain he could hear the hesitancy in my voice. "Just ask away," he reassured me.
Where did the playful side of him go? Maybe it's just this time of the night where everyone is acting weird.
"Raysen," I started.
"Yeah?" he eagerly answered.
"What are you wearing, baby cakes?" I lowered my voice to impersonate him one last time. My room echoed with laughter before hearing the dial tone on the other line.
After a few minutes of excess laughter, I finally turned my lamp off and snuggled with my blanket. The red neon lights on the alarm clock read 3:59. Had I really talked to him for almost two hours?
Time really does fly, when you're having fun.
