Chapter 23 (Continued)

"Breathe," Daxton whispered in her ear. His breath was warm as it slid to her neck. She suppressed a shiver.

"I'm cool," she assured.

"Really?" Adam asked, "'cause you look a little wobbly to me."

"I don't know why you're so affected," Daxton said, his hand coming to rest dangerously on her low back. "You're categorized in this group too."

Kamree waved a loose hand at all the people around them. "They've all got numerous singles and albums out in the world. I have one song. There's no way."

Bemused, Daxton glanced over her head at Adam. "You tell her her number yet?"

"Number? My ranking?"

They ignored her. "I thought you'd tell her," Adam said.

"You're the producer. Jeez, man." Daxton put his hands on her shoulders and looked down at her. "I need you to not freak out."

Creator help her. "Freak out?" Her voice was higher than normal.

"I know you and I know how this is going to go--"

"Tell me."

"I just want to make sure you're not going to freak out."

"Daxton Cavenaugh," she felt breathless, and her words came out that way, but she wanted to know. Despite the way it lit her nerves. "You tell me the damn number or I'll--"

"56."

Her legs really did get wobbly. Seeing her unsteady, Daxton put an arm around her waist and led her to the closest chair in the back.

"56?" She put a shaky hand to her forehead. "No one jumps to 56 with one single."

"Congratulations, apparently you do," Adam supplied.

She shot him a glare.

"Daxton, your father is ready to start." A pretty woman in a headset said over Adam's shoulder.

Daxton scrutinized Kamree, taking her in head to toe. "Are you alright?"

No. But she would be eventually. 56. 56. Her brain loved chanting the number. She nodded.

"Okay, stay back here. Adam will sit with you since he's technically your producer. I'll check on you when we're done."

She gave him a somewhat unconvincing thumbs up.

At the stage, Mr. Cavenaugh took the offered microphone. "Everyone, if you'll take your seats we can get started."

By now, the conference floor was packed. A dull murmur went over the room as everyone grabbed their seats. Then silence.

On the projector screen, the Musetunes logo lit up. "We've invited you here because we've noticed your influence in the Musetunes world and want to celebrate your success. In doing so, we've put together a festival to bring Aces around the kingdom in to share music.

"Usually, this type of meeting is reserved for producers and agents, however, we are looking to include each artist and creator in every step of the process." The projector brought up an image of Mansfield, a huge convention center building in the heart of the city. "We've rented out the entirety of Mansfield for four days for the festival, running through the weekend."

At that point, Daxton took over. His shoulders were relaxed, his smile warm--he was comfortable up there on stage. "The festival is going to run similarly to a convention. Each day will be filled with performances, signings, and panels throughout the day, with special concerts at night.
