I was in my room sketching when daddy walked in. I smiled and he sat down by my feet. "What are you drawing?" He signed. I showed him my sketch book and he gazed at it. "It's of all the things I wanna hear if I ever get my surgery done." I signed. He bit his lip and looked away. I knew that from that look that something was bothering him. I looked at him and sat cross-legged on my bed. He turned his head and signed, "I'm gonna be gone for a few weeks." I felt my heart drop. "Why?" I asked trying not to cry. He looked down and put his face in his hands. I moved over to him and put my arms around his neck. Daddy looked at me and signed, "Johnny will look after you while I'm gone. He's a really good guy, Chrissy. He really is." I nodded and signed. "Promise me that when you get back we can get my surgery done." He smiled at me and nodded. "It's a promise."
Later on, I was getting ready for bed. I climbed in and turned on my neon blue lava lamp. I rested my head on my pillow and closed my eyes. I tossed and turned a bit before I sat up. "I can't sleep." I thought. I got out of bed and reached for an empty journal from underneath my bed. I smiled and grabbed a black ink pen and sat on the floor with my back against the bed frame. I opened the journal and started writing. It took about an hour and a half to write about my nineteen years of life, and then I wrote a little note on the front in permanent marker that said, "Read me." I got up from the floor and sat the journal on the dining table hoping that Johnny would find it and read it. Afterwards, I went back to my room and fell asleep.
