Chapter 37: Highway of Destiny
The weekend of Easter Sunday, I received another surprise invitation to Rocky's Malibu home for a Saturday night barbeque. The odors of spring poured down from the Malibu hills, mingling sweetly with a gentle evening ocean breeze. It was one of those idyllic nights, which made one happy to be alive, happy to be in the company of family and friends. Rocky, nevertheless, seemed troubled, talking less than usual, and drinking more wine than was his habit. Inez retired into the house with my half sister, Elaina, just before eleven. A silence settled between Rocky and I as deep as the ocean horizon.
