tick, tock,
I hear the clock.
Powering up
my gears;
slowly you hear
the rhythmic beats
of my healthy heart.

tick, tock,
I hear the clock.
unsure of what comes next,
only a novice;
A time of rejoice,
proudly reciting
freshly learned knowledge
to anyone who is
there to listen.

tick, tock,
I hear the clock.
Parents look at
me in disapproval,
scowls are given.
Piles of incomplete
schoolwork, dispersed
across the desk.

tick, tock,
I hear the clock.
feelings of ambivalence,
of being prematurely
let loose
on the unsuspecting world.
Time split between
working,studying,
stress levels rising.

tick, tock,
I hear the clock.
Halfway through my life now,
no time for appeasement.
Only chivalrous actions;
Ignored bills, rising high,
hoping they'll fly away.

tick, tock,
I hear the clock.
My life span is almost up;
debilitated health;
a portrayal of a human
past its prime.
I am slowly forgotten.

tick, tock,
I hear the clock.
wearing down,
matching each beat
of my failing heart.

tick.
my heart taking the last beat.

tock.
my lungs taking their final breath.

tick, tock,
the clock goes,
slowly, losing its energy.
The wind quietly
whispers,
'all is well my darling, all is well'
and in that moment
I understood.

a clock is not just a clock,
& many do not understand.

authors note;;
first poem, first book.
