i. sight

she looked like fire and ice,

like a bitter winter morning and a sweet spring evening,

like a beauty and a beast spun into one girl,

like a demon and an angel battling for dominion,

like a caterpillar spinning its cocoon,

and a butterfly taking its first flight.

scars as jagged as a knife covered her face on one side,

and the other was soft as a petal, svelte like a dancer.

most people would turn away when they saw those defects,

but he was bereft from the moment he looked upon her.
