"Ms. Sanders, can I see you in my office, please?"
My hand froze over the kitchen counter top, wet rag in hand as Dominic's voice floated through the hallway.
Curiosity gnawed at my stomach as I tossed my cleaning rag across the sink and made my way towards Dominic's office.
What could he want? I don't think I've done anything wrong today?
My feet brought me up to the doorway of the office as I peeked my head around and into the office. Dominic was sitting at his desk, leaning back in his chair looking the prime example of the brooding, stoic man he was when I first met him.
His stare was set on the computer screen in front of him, his eyes glaring at the screen with such a intensity, it seemed as though he was trying to explode the computer through nonexistent, telepathic powers.
He didn't speak right away, nor did he tick his head in my direction as to acknowledge my new presence.
"Sir?" I tried, anxious to break the silence.
Eventually, Dominic's head turned, his stare fixing onto mine.
I fought to hold back the gasp that tried to slip past my lips when his eyes finally met mine. The level of wrath mixing through his cold, gray stare was alarming and altogether confusing as to why it was aimed at me.
For a moment, he simply stared.
The need to fidget under his acute stare was becoming overwhelming in his dominating silence. I could feel my heart beginning to pound faster in my chest, my palms starting to accumulate nervous sweat as I waited for him to speak.
Was I getting fired?
"Ms. Sanders," Dominic suddenly spoke, his voice cutting through my nerves with a jagged knife at the frigid tone he was using with me.
"Sir?" My voice was meek and unsure; a rarity for me.
I watched as his jaw ticked to the side, tension rolling off of him in agonizing waves.
"Were you aware that we have Nanny Cams in several rooms of the house?"
Dominic watched me as I struggled under his intense gaze, his question hanging in the air and begging for an answer.
"No, sir. I didn't know that."
"Well, we do," he continued, tearing me down with his demeaning tone. "We have one in Maya's room, one in the kitchen, and one in the living room."
By the way he spoke those last two words, I was certain he had seen that Daren was in his home while his daughter was sleeping without his permission or knowledge.
"Mr. Reed, I'm so sorry, I had no idea Daren was coming over. He just showed up and invited himself inside! I should have made him leave sooner than I did and I'm sorry. I swear it won't happen again! Just, please don't fire me over this. I know he shouldn't have been here but-"
"Fire you?" Dominic cut me off to say, his brows dipping in confusion.
"I'm not firing you, Kat."
Immediate relief stormed my mind as he shook his head. Yet, a furious look stayed put on his handsome features. His full lips were pulled down into a deep frown that seemed to take over his entire face as it made every line of displeasure and worry on his face dip and stand out more prominently.
