Patricia (after Dorianne Laux and Tim Tomlinson)

When I was five years old and

studying kindergarten,

I did not approach a girl the way the popular boys

did, like waving around toys and giving

sandwiches, and playing with them during

recess.

I did not talk with anecdotes or boasted about

my parents or my talents or what trivia

I know.

I did not comb my hair or dress fancily to

gain attention and be called "handsome".

I just approached a girl I liked, and with

a smack on her cheeks, said "I love you."

Because that's how I thought love should

work.

Boy, was I wrong.
