Hidden within

Part 12

Vivian POV

It was a couple days after the funeral and I have started my new jobs. Two waitress jobs and another at a bookstore. It brought in  money which is nice. I was trying to get a sense of normality back in the orphanage.

I was currently going to work. I had to write the instructions for the lasagna for dinner since I was coming home late. When I did that I started walking to work. I arrived and put my hair up and my stuff away. I tied my apron and started working.

It was a nice fancy restaurant. I did my usual and when my shift was over I grabbed my tips and my bag and walk back to the orphanage. I entered and went to the kitchen to find dishes in the sink and no lasagna left.

I sighed and started on the dishes. I was exhausted by the time I'd finished. I looked on my schedule and see I work tomorrow at noon until around dinner. Then a late shift at the diner. I grabbed a yogurt and headed to the laundry room. I swapped a couple loads and fold them. I throw them in baskets before putting them outside people's doors.

I then went to my bed and collapsed onto it. I fell asleep instantly.

I awoke to the sounds of feet and everyone getting up. I checked my clock and saw it's only 6 am. I groan and get up. I take a quick shower before going downstairs. I start making breakfast for everyone. It takes a while but by the time it's over I'd makes pancakes for everyone.

I cleaned up when everyone was done and went to get ready for work. I put on my uniform and made sure to grab my other one. I also needed to go to the grocery store soon. I sighed and headed out the door. I had made another quick dinner for someone to heat up.

I then was about to leave when Sarah a five year old stops me. I smile at her and she says "Ms.Vivian can I please go with you. Please." I smile at her and go grab her jacket. I take her hand and we walk to work. I say "Now when we get there you have to stay where I put you and don't talk to strangers please. I will take you home when I have my lunch if you want." She nods and we continue to walk.

I show her where I put my purse and jacket and I let her tie my apron. I smiled at her and gave her some colors and a sheet to keep her busy. I then pulled out my pad and started to working. It wasn't a notable night until a group of guys came in and sat in my section. It was almost my lunch break and I was gonna bring Sarah back home so she would go to bed and make sure everyone has eaten dinner. I went and took their drink order. I then brought some food to other tables and the drinks to theirs.

I ask for there order but one of the guys was staring at me. His friends bumped him and then he ordered. I went and placed the order. I then looked at the time my lunch was approaching so I go over to Sarah and tell her it will only be a couple minutes before I'll take her back to the orphanage. I ask her if she wants to help me. She nods and I laugh. I grab a tray and hand it to her. I grab all the food for my table and put some on her tray. I watch her as I point where to go. We arrive and I hand out the food on my tray. I then put my tray down and grabbed Sarah making sure she doesn't drop anything. I hoisted her to the table level and whispered in her ear "now that plate goes to the man closest to the outside." She does and I kiss her cheek before asking if they needed anything. They all seemed kinda shocked but shook there head. I grab the trays in one hand and Sarah's hand in the other. I lead her back to her spot and told her it was almost time for us to head home. She pouts but I tickle her and she smiles.

I continue to work until someone tells me it's time for my lunch break. I smile and make sure all my tables are good. The group of guys left me a nice tip which I was thankful for. Another waitress comes to take over my tables for my lunch. I put my jacket on and grabbed my bag. I helped Sarah put her jacket on before grabbing her hand to leave. We chat while going back. I sent her to bed and grabbed some food. I eat quickly and head back to work.

The rest of my shift was easy until one of the guys from that table came back in. The hostess pointed to me and a sighed. I continued to work as he walked over here. He tapped me on the shoulder and was about to start talking when my name was called from the back. I inwardly groaned. It was the boss. I excused myself from the man and went to the back.

My boss sat behind his desk and said "so a little birdie told me you brought a child to work tonight." I was nervous started to twiddle my fingers as he continues. "Now it's okay this time since she didn't seem to be a problem as I heard. But don't make it a regular thing." I smiled and replied "sorry she asked as I was about to leave and I couldn't say no to her. It's only a one time thing I promise sir." He smiles and says "good now keep up the good work your dismissed."

I exit his office and let out a breathe I was holding in. I went back to where I'd set my tray. The man was still standing there. I grabbed my tray and continued to work. He followed me and I turn around to say "what did you need sweetie. I'm kinda busy."He looks a little flabbergasted but finally says "my name is Pierce and I was in here earlier and I kinda wanted to ask you something." I hear someone calling waitress and I give him a look saying hurry up. He doesn't say anything so I walk away to that table apologizing for the wait.

I smile and ask for there order. I go and place their order. The man named Pierce comes back over to me and I stop once again. I huff in annoyance and say "sir I'm kinda busy" He smiles and says "I'm just nervous is all I wanted to ask you out on a date." My eyes widen and I giggle at him. I grab some food that's done and say "sit down right there and I'll be back in a minute."

I go and give the food to whoever ordered it. I checked my watch and saw it was almost time to go home. Good I thought I was tired. I grab some checks and went to process those. I then finished with that and went over to Pierce. I answered "I'll have to check my schedule so after work come over to my house and I'll check for you." He nods and I continue to work. When I see it's 11. I clock out and go grab my stuff. I meet Pierce and start to walk home. When I get there I notice his eyes widen a bit.

I go inside and look at my work schedule. I work early tomorrow at the book store and then work later at the other restaurant. I look through the fridge to see if I need to go to the store. I do. I then turn the lights out making sure that no one is still awake and everyone is here. The curfew for the older ones is ten on a school night and midnight on the weekend.

I lead him up to my office and look around for my planner. I find it and smile. I look at him and say when are you thinking. He says Friday and I check my work schedule and see if the kids have anything. I bite my lip as I read it. Friday works and I'm about to tell him when a knock is on the door. My eyes go wide and I whisper "hide quick I'm not explaining why your hear this late to whoever is behind that door."

He hides in the closet and I compose myself. I open the door and see it's Macy. A young girl. There were dried tear stain on her face and upon seeing me she ran and hugged my legs. I pick her up and we sit in my desk chair. I rock her back and forth until her breathing is calm and stopped crying.  I wipe her tears before kissing all over her face to make her laugh. I succeed before asking "why are you up its late and you have school tomorrow."

She whispers "I had a nightmare and started crying and I usually snuggle with Mrs.Anderson but she's gone. I went to your bedroom and couldn't find you so I came here." I hug and ask "will you tell me what your nightmare was about and if you don't want to that's fine. I'll make you a warm cup of milk and if your still scared I'll let you sleep in my bed so you won't get scared."

She smiles at me and says "I was being chased by monsters and they kept saying mean things like my mom and dad did. I woke up crying and I went to find you."

I hug her tight before whispering "let's get you that milk and then I'll snuggle you tonight. Macy look at me if anyone says anything bad about you or tries to hurt you come get me and I'll kick there booty for you." She giggles and I carry her downstairs. I warm some milk up for her and put it in a cup. I watched her drink it all and start to get tired. I smiled at her. I picked her up and went upstairs. I set her in my bed and rubbed her back until I know she's asleep. I go back to my office.

I'm tired and wanted to go to bed. I say so Friday works for me does it work for you. He nods and I hand him a piece of paper "text me with the details. Now you have to go now.  I have things to do." I lead him to the door and make sure to lock it. I lean against the door with a smile before going to bed.
