Mijos are your bags packed?" Lauren yells up the stairs.
"Si mami." Our two year old twins reply.
"Ok let's go." No moves are made and Lauren just throws her hands up in exasperation.
"¡Ahora mijos!"
"Boys let's go." I yell as I rock our 6 month old baby girl in my arms. They start running down the stairs with their things in hand loudly clashing against the stairs.
"Let's go tia Dinah is waiting for us." She says and the boys nod running outside dragging their suitcases behind. I put our daughter in her carry seat and buckler her up tight. I smile and kiss her forehead before picking her up as we walk to the door behind Lauren who was trying to rangle our boys.
"Honey I swear these kids drive me up a wall."
"No they don't." I say simply.
"You're right their my precious little boys and they complete my life."
"And they're mamas boys."
"Well she's definitely a daddy's girl. She loves you." She says lightly tickling our resting daughter who baby giggled and wiggled around.
"And she will be taught how a man is supposed to treat her because her daddy's going to treat her like princess."
"I know the kids cute but y'all have a flight to catch that you're running late for." Dinah says standing in front of the car with the kids in the back. We hurry up and get to the car.
"Thing 1 hop out of the car you're going to sit on Mami's lap." I say to the two little children and one jumps out and then I buckle the car seat in. Lauren jumps into the back and I get in the front.we zoom off to the airport. We get on the plane with much of a hassle because of the boys but finally we do and give them iPads to play with for the flight. The ride was long but we eventually landed in the beautiful state of New Jersey finally.
We grab out luggage and head to the exit which is clogged with paparazzi and fans.
"I told you we should've brought security." I say to Lauren.
"I'm not bringing security to your childhood home for some lousy paps and obsessive fans."
"Here take her ill carry the boys." I tell her and she pushes the stroller while I pick up our two boys in my arms and we walk through the doors and meet up with our driver. We get loaded in and endure the long ride to my hometown. Finally we arrive at the house that built me. I get us unloaded out of the car and knock on the door and my uncle opened the door.
"Marcus look at you and your family." He looks almost shocked at Lauren and the kids. He looks back at me but replaces the surprised look with a smile.
"Your beautiful family." He says again adding the adjective.
"Hi uncle Clive. This is my wife Lauren, my twin sons Gavin and Grayson. And this here is my baby girl Grace."
"Oh wow she's beautiful Mark. Absolutely gorgeous." He says admiring the baby in my arms.
"Thank you."
"Well come on in the family is all here."
"Great." We walk inside and through the house where we heard laughter and talking. Clive lead us into the living room where there were all of my cousins and aunts and uncles. They all for the most part loved around her except for me, few of my cousins, and one of my aunts and one of my uncles. Talia was still working on getting out of here so she was half here and half in New York City in an apartment in the Bronx with her boyfriend. The eyes all looked up at us and faces changed. Some were shocked with jaws dropped others wide eyes and some just looked.
"Hello everybody...hum-this is my wife Lauren."
"You married a white..." my cousin CJ started but was cut off by Talia.
"Bienvenidos Lauren. ¿Como estas?"
"Muy bien gracias. Tu español es muy bien."
"I've been practicing." She hugs Lauren and then releases picking Gavin up.
"Wassup little man."
"Me too Tia Talia!" Grayson whines.
"Alright buddy clam down." Talia says and picks up Grayson as well.
"I missed you guys."
"We missed you too Tia."
"Ok which one are you." She says looking at Gavin.
"I'm Grayson."
"Don't lie to your Tia mijo." Lauren says and Gavin giggles.
"Just kidding I'm Gavin."
"You little trickster." She tickles his side with her hand and he wiggles around.
"As I was saying this is my wife Lauren. My twins Gavin and Grayson. And my daughter Grace."
"So you married a white girl?" CJ finally gets out.
"No. I married a Latina woman."
"Well alright my man. At least you did it first. You've over the way brother." He jokes.
"Hey beautiful." He says winking at Lauren. His mother hits the back of his head. The kitchen door opens and my dad walks in.
"Marcus. Lauren." He says going in for a hug from Lauren as she was closest.
"How are you darling."
"I'm good Papa J." She replies hugging him back.
"And oh my goodness is this her." I nod and hand Grace over.
"She's beautiful son."
"Thank you dad."
"How precious are you baby. So perfect." He says admiring her.
"You are ok with this?" My grandmother asks.
"I'm fine with it. Why wouldn't I be? Because he chose to marry someone not of our race?" She nods.
"It doesn't matter. I'm not going to make their relationship and their marriage condemned just because of her skin complexion. That's what white people did to us for years. I'm over that. Let the two be in love with their beautiful babies."
"Welcome to the family Lauren." Sarah, CJs mom says.
"Thank you very much." Lauren replied with her million dollar smile.
"All the kids are downstairs so I'll go take these little nuggets down there." Talia says smiling at the boys.
"Grace is going to do some cooking with grandpa." My dad says taking her into the kitchen with him. My aunt Sarah brings Lauren to sit down with them and then begin asking us questions.
"So where did you two meet?"
"On the Harvard campus."
"So you graduated from Harvard too."
"No I did not. I went to UCLA. It was the easiest for me with my job. I was at Harvard for some research studies for my thesis."
"So you got your masters?"
"I did. I took the UCLA 5 year master degree track for anthropology and minor in music production."
"What's your job?" My uncle Clive asks.
"You don't know her?" My cousin Ariel asks. Uncle Clive shakes his head.
"I'm a performer."
"You're a stripper?" CJ asks and his mother hits the back of his head again.
"No you dumb-"
"Ariel..." Sarah warns.
"She's a multi-platnium selling recording artist with 11 AMAs, 9 VMAs, 30 other international awards, 9 teen choice surfboards, , 15 billboard awards, 12 I heartradio music awards, and 16 Grammy awards. Not to mention an oscar for her role in Latin Princess. She started in X Factor where she was put into a group with Dinah, Ally, Normani, and Camila. Then after some boos like worth it and work from home and Boss Camila left he group and there was hella drama. Fast forward late 2017 she embarks on a solo career with her same record label. She gets dropped for publicly shaming an interviewer who disrespected her good friend Normani Kordei over her skin color and her natural hair. She was all like. 'Who the f- made you God and allowed you to say that bull about Normani. She's beautiful and an amazing person. Blah blah blah. Like you are a douche bye.' Then she decided not to apologize for it and to just officially leave the label and signed onto Demi Lovato and Nick Jonas' label which she helped build up to eventually now its responsible for many of today's biggest artists. She has four gold certified albums, 7 platnium or gold certified songs, and over a billion views on many of her music videos. She's starred in three movies and created multiple lines of perfume and clothing. She had a 20 million dollar deal with Chanel for a new kine of bags she designed. She is a United Nations Ambassador. She's been on trips to Costa Rica, Guatemala, Namibia, and South Sudan. She has donated millions to charitable causes and built wells and homes. She's helped bring awareness to women's issues, illegal immigrants, refugees, racial issues especially during the Donald Trump presidency, she is an active advocate for LGBTQ rights and she continues to do all of this while being a mother and a wife and she's so badass and I love her so much."
"Wow you're a hardcore fan. Not even I knew all of that stuff about myself." Lauren says laughing.
"So you knew they were dating?"
"I knew when they were rumored to be together to when they were together. To win they thought she was back with her ex to when they thought he was back with his ex to when they went on a one month break then jumped back and got engaged then eloped and then she got pregnant and then she got pregnant again until now."
"Jeez Ariel like you don't even call me that often."
"I know. I should call more often. I'm going to do that."
"Anyways now that her weirdness is out of the way. Lauren what is your favorite part of being on tour?" CJ asks.
"Visiting new places. Each tour brings me somewhere new and somewhere familiar. I get to travel the world so that's pretty awesome."
"What's the worst part?"
"Saying goodbye to my families. I always hate having to say goodbye to the boys and I haven't had to say goodbye to Grace but it will be so difficult. I also know for a fact that I'll see my parents and siblings less than I do when I'm not on tour. It's rough."
"And you spend months away from your kids at a time?" My aunt Carol asks judgingly.
"No. we make plans for them to visit for a few shows and me to come home or something. So the longest I tend to go away from them is 4 weeks. Sometimes a little more is something happens. Anything they get sick or have something at school or something I do my absolute hardest to be there. I don't miss the important things. And my tours are normally only around 5 to 6 months these days."
"Do you miss being on top of the world." My uncle Terrance asks her.
"What do you mean miss? She is on top of the world." Ariel interrupts. "She currently has three songs trenching on the Billboard top 10 and her albums have yet to drop off the Billboard top 200."
"Calm down fangirl. I mean going on tour for complete years and going wild and selling out shows."
"I mean sometimes I reminisce but I know I would hate to be on a year long tour and going wild. I am only 29 so I'm still living life wild in the means of enjoy life but I love my family and they are most important to me. I love spending time with my babies and taking care of them and for me that's living on top of the world in my happily ever after."
"Do you miss seeing all of the packed stadiums and everything."
"Well I..."
"She sells out stadiums and arenas still she has a sold out show at MSG in two weeks It sold out 20 minutes after tickets went on sale. I got myself a ticket so I will be attending." Ariel says proudly.
"That's so cool.." CJ says enthralled with the new information.
"So Lauren where are you from?" Terrance asks.
"Miami Florida."
"Cubano central huh?" My cousin Daniel says nodding his head.
"Proudly, 305 for life." She lightly laughs as she says it.
"What was your childhood like?"
"I uh don't really talk about my childhood. It wasn't great." She says nervously.
"It's ok we grew up poor too."
"No it's not like that my family was poor but there were other things. My birth father wasn't the greatest guy. It's uh really complicated I'd rather not get into it." They nodded in understanding.
"Ariel don't you know everything about her?" CJ says pushing the limits.
"Not my place Ceej." Ariel raises her hands and Lauren gives her thankful smile.
"Well what about your childhood that was left after him."
"Still wasn't great. My life wasn't really even half-way decent until I was on X Factor but there was still problems. And life started to get better for me but again that was all taken for me. I don't think I felt pure happiness since then with my life until I met Marcus. He fixed everything that was broken in me and my life." They smile at her as she looked back at me with a smile and I kissed her cheek.
"What's your family life like now?"
"It great. My mom is always my mom. I have a younger brother and a younger sister who have bothered grown into beautiful young adults. My step dad has actually become more of a father to me than my ghostly biological dad ever was. Everything has set itself into place and the last 7 years of my life have been magical. Especially the last 4."
"Wonderful." Aunt Sarah says kindly.
More questions are asked and answers give and jokes are told. It was all going extremely well until a certain family member made an appearance.
"What's up family!" Sean says entering the room with his daughter by Ariana Grande, Zaria.
"Sean?" Lauren says questioningly. She knows him well who doesn't he's famous.
"Lauren." He replies almost shocked.
"Auntie Lolo!" Zaria says running to Lauren.
"Hey sweetie. How are you?" Lauren embraces the little girl.
"I'm good. Auntie Lolo. I missed you."
"I missed you too babygirl. How's mommy?"
"She's good she misses you."
"I miss her too. Tell her that for me will you?"
"Of course."
Sean and I look at Lauren in absolute shock.
"Uhm. How do you know my brother and his kid?" I ask seriously confused.
"Go find your cousins sweetie." She whispers to Zaria who nods and bounces away.
"He's your brother?" She asks confused.
"Yeah." I answer still very confused by the interaction.
"I didn't know he was your brother."
"Were not close this is the first time I've seen him in 10 years." I say not even looking at Sean.
"Well you see me and Sean go way back." She says vaguely.
"Yeah way way back."
"In the beginning of my music career we were partners. We did so many collars together it was ridiculous. Most didn't get released. I was also helping Ari on her album at the time so then they met. He knocked her up and left so I was there with Ari raising ZaZa and I've been present in her life as a female figure and her God mother since then even when he came back into the picture."
"Wait how did I not know you were in Zarias life?" Sean asks.
"Because Ariana knew you wouldn't want me there."
"Look we may have had our issues in the past sure but I know you're great with kids and your morals are good. I would've protested and made it difficult but if you're a good god mother to her then I'm cool."
"No back then you would not have let me near Zaria."
"I mean I might've."
"No but Ariana wanted me to make sure she was ok when Ari went on tour and was staying with her brother and to make sure she had a female motherly figure to watch over her and be there for her because Frankie kept dragging her to his things with all dudes and Zaria needed structure and discipline and as she put it, 'some Latin strictness'."
"So Zaria is little ZaZa your niece?" I clarify and she nods.
"Why wouldn't Sean want you around Zaria?"
"He had issues with me and the way I lived my life and we had a blowout it wasn't pretty."
"You were a psychopath."
"No I wasn't. You're exaggerating."
"She had been in a mental hospital three times."
"That's not true. I went once and went for checkups twice to make sure actually nothing was wrong. My parents were doing too much just because I had breakdown they thought I was crazy. The music business messes with your head and my past didn't help."
"I know that now. Ariana explained it."
"You didn't even let me explain you just pushed me out of your life and tried to discredit me and my reputation to anyone I knew."
"I'm sorry alright."
"Only because you thought she was mentally ill you pushed her away?" Daniel asks almost disgusted.
"It's more complicated than that. There were other factors."
"Like?"
"Private matters." He doesn't elaborate but Lauren bites holes through his skull.
"Like what?" I ask and Lauren looks at me.
"We were good friends on our way to something more and I just got angry one night that's all."
"What did you do?" CJ pushes.
"It's doesn't matter what I did. It's in the past."
"Lauren?" I ask and her eyes appear to be watering. She hides it and wipes them seemingly like nothing happened.
"I'm back." My moms voice comes from the hallway and she smiles when she looks around.
"Look at this happy family. Lauren welcome." She says with a smile.
"Thank you mama D. I'm so happy to be here."
"Well let's get dinner started ladies. All the ladies, so Ariel no skipping out."
"Got it Auntie Dory." Ariel says rolling her eyes.
"Well then lets go." Ariel says standing up and helping Lauren up then they all go into the kitchen and my cousin and uncles all gather closer.
"Alright man let's get to the details what's she like?"
"She's amazing. She's the perfect girl, the perfect wife, and the perfect human."
"Man what's it like being married to a popstar."
"It's hard sometimes, the rumors, and lack of privacy but as long as I'm with her it's all worth it. I love that she's doing what she loves. It's beautiful."
"Is she tempered?"
"Slightly what Latin woman isn't?"
"How is she with the kids?"
"She loves those kids as much as I do and she's an incredible mother."
"How'd you propose?"
"She had just graduated from college finally and we were on a rooftop in LA and she just looked perfect. I had been waiting for the right moment to do it. The ring was in my pocket for weeks. I decided to do it just as she was silhouetted by the sunlight. I gathered myself and did it. I got down in one knee and asked her to marry me and be my wife forever. She said hell yes and accepted the proposal."
"So how was the wedding."
"Oh uh we eloped."
"That was very clear since no one knew you were married with kids but how did you do so."
"We went to Hawaii and had a ceremony with a pastor we knew and a couple friends as witnesses I guess. Our friend Dinah her old band mate hooked it all up because we told her we wanted a small thing and no family because we didn't want to deal with all of the wedding stuff. She brought a white dress and I got a suit. We set up a small thing on a friends deck and got it done. We were both so happy and it was perfect. Neither of us are ones for fanfare or fancy situations so the idea of a wedding would've been for our family and friends and that didn't sit right with us so we just got married nothing extra about it."
"That's nice."
"So what was your relationship like when you were dating what did you guys do for those three years oh know obviously married life is very different so what was it like?" Sean walks back into the room.
"It was amazing. We were best friends and lovers in one. We supported one another and helped one another in all contexts and for all reasons. We were constantly together because when she went on tour we wouldn't get to be anywhere near each other. Our bond and relationship has always been strong even when we were just friends. I watched guys break her heart and I wouldn't do that to her. She's too precious. She had been cheated on a lot in her life and even if we didn't get to where we are I wanted her to know she was desirable enough for monogamy and she deserved loyalty."
"You've turned into such a mush it's disgusting." CJ says and i just chuckle shaking my head.
"When you find yourself a Lauren in your own you'll understand why I'm mushy. She's the best thing to happen to my life well right after my beautiful children."
"You have kids with Lauren?" Sean asks.
"Yes three."
"You're not married yet and you have that many kids."
"We have been married for four years. Our oldest are 2 years old."
"Oh you're married. My bad."
"Why are you so concerned with my wife this is the first time you've talked to me in 10 years."
"She was mine first."
"Excuse me."
"You heard me!" Sean says getting big on me. I stand up no longer afraid of him. I wasn't strong anymore he could just throw me around like nothing anymore.
"How was she yours first?"
"None of your business."
"No tell me."
"She and I were close back in the day." The door opens and Lauren sees is her eyes go wide and she backs out of the room.
"What does that mean?"
"Talk to your wife about it."
I point a finger ready to say something then I just huff and walk into the kitchen. The girls were all talking.
"Lauren baby can I talk to you for a minute."
"Hum of course baby." She walks behind me and I lead her outside and I lose it.
"What exactly was your relationship with Sean! Don't lie to me! How were you his in the past? Why am I only finding out about this now 7 years after we started dating!" I scream at her and she crosses her arms pissed that my voice raised above a simple aggravated vocal volume.
"Firstly I was never his or at least I never considered myself that. He was a friend who tried to be more. We were on our way to being more but he screwed that up for himself. You're only finding out about this now because he was a huge part of Ariana's story not mine!"
"How did he screw it up for himself?" Her armor broke and I could tell I struck a cord because she shifted her footing and stuttered before finally regaining her composure and continuing.
"When he had come over to watch a movie to my house and he tried to make it a Netflix in chill type of situation but you know what takes a while for me things went wrong. He got upset and then we started airing out a whole lot of horrible words about one another and it finished with him uh punching me in the face and busting my lip open. ." Her eyes were watering.
"Oh baby I'm so sorry." I instantly felt bad for yelling at her.
"After he hit me I went ballistic and he was trying to get me to calm down while I thrashed around trying to hit him back because you don't hit a Miami girls nd not expect her to knock you out. He hit me again and I fell on the ground. I got up and threw things at him and screamed for him to leave. He wasn't so I started getting mad at myself as an effect of my anger issues and dug my nails into my hands and banging my head on the wall. Everything was rushing back at once and I had a completely meltdown. I was still screaming for him to leave even after Big on the floor. He didn't so I called the cops and he resented me ever since. He was still working with Ari and she slept with him before I could tell her what happened because I needed therapy to deal with the fact that a man who was closed to me who I trusted and thought had feelings for me hit me twice and caused a mental breakdown. She got knocked up with his kid and like 4 years ago he came back after getting some help and reentered Zarias life and I have been staying away from him ever since. That's why you didn't recognize Zaria because it has been a while since you've seen her you saw her last when she was two. I've been checking up on her and Ariana has been sending me updates and asking me to come back and take her for the weekend or something but I can't risk him being there. I couldn't. I wouldn't do that. Say he came to pick her up instead of Ari when he found out because he would've. I didn't want to bring him into our home or near my kids. I wasn't going to do that."
"I screwed up. I never should have yelled at you. I'm sorry baby." I pull her into me and kiss her forehead.
"I knew Sean was dealing with his anger and he had a few court cases with exes over assault but I didn't know about you."
"I don't talk about it. I told you the story before just without the name. He was the only one I didn't give a name for because he was so big I knew you would know who it was and I didn't want to bring any of that back. I didn't know he was your brother. I would've told you had I known."
"It's ok don't worry about it. I'll keep you safe. That's my job. Gavin and Grayson won't go near him and trust me when I say Grace will be in my sight at all times unless she's with my mom or dad. I promise."
"Thank you baby. I just want to take care of our family."
"I understand. I do too and I've never had good times with my brother. Ever."
She wipes her tears and we both head inside hand in hand and she returns to cooking and as I'm leaving I hear Ariel ask her if she was ok which she replied with a hum. She wasn't going to be back to her true self for a bit. I knew that.
