Chapter 14

Cheater quickly followed Dillenwater down the hallway, pushing the wheelchair in which Alexia was seated.  Cheater was breathing heavy because he was worrying, but he wasn’t nearly as heavy as Alexia, because the contractions had officially begun.

“Dillenwater!” Alexia said loudly as they neared the lab door.

“What?” he asked loudly in return, sounding annoyed.

“Am I getting pain medication for this?” she asked, motioning at her belly while Cheater rolled her to a stop at the lab door.  Dillenwater looked at her for only a second before opening the door and motioning for Cheater to push her through.  Cheater did as he was told, worrying more about Alexia than he was thinking about what he was actually doing.

“No,” Dillenwater replied simply as he shut the door behind him.

“Why not?” Alexia almost screamed in her anger and pain.  Cheater put a hand on her shoulder, trying to calm her down. He knew that she would only make things worse for herself in the long run if she wasn’t careful.

Dillenwater didn’t even look back at Alexia, replying as he placed a thin sheet and pillow on the bed, motioning for Cheater to help Alexia onto it.  “You’ll be doing it without drugs.  There’s no reason to give them to you.  Women have been doing it naturally forever, so you can too.”

Once Alexia was settled onto the bed, she replied.  “This isn’t a natural birth though.  It was an unnatural conception, done in a lab, and it should be an unnatural birth, as it’s happening in a lab,” she said angrily, her eyes squeezing tightly shut as another contraction must have hit her.  Cheater had a feeling that she would try to make as little noise as possible, so that she didn’t give Dillenwater the satisfaction of hearing her pain.

“Too bad.  You don’t have a part in this decision,” Dillenwater said, going over to an intercom on the wall and pressing a button.  An alarm immediately started going off in the hallway they’d just come from, and within seconds scientists started filing into the room, one after another.  After there were about ten white-coated scientists in the room, Dillenwater hit another button and the alarm stopped going off.  Dillenwater then looked to the scientists, whom had all been standing around staring at Alexia.

“You know what you’re supposed to do.  So get to it,” he told them, and they immediately jumped into action, running around the room doing all sorts of things.

Cheater then turned to Alexia, who flinched at the moment.  Cheater, who had been standing up until that moment, sat down on his accustomed chair next to Alexia’s bed and held her hand.  “Are you okay?” he asked, and Alexia forced out a laugh.

“I’d be a lot better if I had something for the pain,” she replied, and Cheater nodded.  He leaned close to her and whispered his next words in her ear.

“I’ll see what I can do.”

Cheater then stood up and walked over to Dillenwater, who was reading information off of a chart, probably something about Alexia.  He either didn’t notice Cheater, or just didn’t care that he was there, not even acting like he was there.  So Cheater finally tapped his shoulder to get his attention.

“What do you want?  Can’t you see that we’re busy?” Dillenwater asked rudely.  Cheater nodded slowly but still continued.

“I know that you don’t care a bit about her comfort, or how much pain she’s in.  But what you do care about are the babies, and it would probably be much easier for Alexia to deliver if she’s in less pain,” Cheater said, basically lying through his teeth and hoping that Dillenwater wouldn’t notice.  He had no idea whether any of that was actually true or not.  Dillenwater chuckled at him.
