chapter 2

"Stupid. Stupid. Stupid." I muttered to myself as I hit my head against the armoire in the corner of my room. Of course Enoch would still be in the loop.

"Who's stupid?" A voice asked. I jumped.

"Millard! Why are you in my room?" I asked the very invisible boy currently standing, naked I presumed, in my room.

"I just wanted to know if the rumors were true," he said while putting on his usual outfit.

"What rumors?" I asked.

"I wanted to know if you were back. I've missed you terribly. We all have." He stepped towards me and gave me a long tight hug.

"Yeah, maybe everyone except Enoch," I muttered, too low for Millard to hear.

See, when I first arrived, I was 12 years old. Millard was my first friend and soon became my closest. He still is. He was the one who introduced me to the others and because he stopped aging at 13, he tool on the role of protector with me. A big brother figure. Now that I'm 16, the roles have been reversed.

I know, I know. You're probably wondering "Wait. How come you've aged if you live in the loop?"  Well you see, after a year of living with Miss Peregrine, I was sent away for three years once I turned 13. For multiple reasons. Miss Peregrine greatly needed the help of my peculiarities so she sent me someplace else. This arrangement also helped me get away from Enoch, who really didn't like having another small child running around the house.

Yeah, things were not good between us.

"Will you actually be staying with us now?" I heard Millard ask. I smiled to myself, realizing that maybe now things would be different. I was home now and nothing had changed.

"Yeah bud. I will."

How naive I was to thing that these halcyon days would never end.
