I set my bags down on the steps of the college dorm and take a deep breath before stepping in. Riddled with anxiety I walk up the steps and head over to the check-in.
"Hi, I'm Damian Cruz, I'm here to check into my dorm." the girl at the counter doesn't bother to look up as she responds.
"Are you a first year?"
"Yes," I reply timidly. As she flips through the pages of a binder I look around to see the many families gathered around dropping off their sons and daughters for college, and I think of how meaningful this moment must be for them. I think of my mom, and how she couldn't be here today because as usual, she had work. Before I have a chance to drift any further in thought the girl responds,
"Here you are, room B12 second floor," she holds out a key with a chain attached that reads B12.
"Thank you," I take the keys and grab my luggage. As I walk up to my dorm I see that the door is half way open. I step in and see bags among other things laid out on the bed to the right. I set my bags on the second bed and sit down. The room is bigger than I thought it'd be. There's two beds on each side, along with two desk on ether side. On the far end of the room a tree looms over the only window, obstructing my view of the campus, and blocking out the suns light.
I wonder who my roommate is, what they'll be like. I get up and walk over to their side of the bed. I see textbooks and soccer cleats, so they're into sports. I pick up one of the textbooks, 'Calculus ' smart to. I pick up another book and a small picture falls from it. A picture of a women with a little boy on her lap, they're sitting in a field of grass. The little boy looks up at the women, smiling.
"Having fun?" I jump at the sound of someone at the door. I turn to see a guy with a confused look on his face. He's tall with a nice build to him. His blue eyes draw my attention.
"I'm sorry I I was just-," I stammer, ashamed at having been caught.
"it's fine," he says with a smile, and I blush.
"I'm sorry, I was being rude," I say.
"I'm Ian," he sits on his bed and begins unpacking. Placing his things into the drawer by his bed. I do the same.
"I'm Damian, is this your first year?"
"Second,"
"It's my first, you play soccer?" I ask pointing at the cleats on his bed.
"No these are for football," he laughs, "I'm guessing you're not into sports?"
"No I guess not."
"Where are you from?"
"Redbroke California, You?"
"You're pretty far from home. I'm from Irvine. What made you decide to come here?"
"A scholarship,"
"Wow, you must pretty smart," He looks up at me and smiles.
"No, just hard working."
His smile makes want to smile but I don't. I don't want to risk liking a guy who for all I know could never like a guy to begin with. I ignore the impulse to feel giddy, and continue unpacking.
"There's a party tonight," he says, "you coming?"
"It's the first week of school, how can there be a party already?" I ask incredulously.
"Well there is and you're going"
"No, I'm tired I should really get some rest."
"Come on it'll be fun, gives you a chance to meet some new people."
Excited and nervous at the thought of making some friends on my first night and for some reason not wanting to disappoint Ian, I oblige.
