Chapter 3
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Humming.
Someone was humming a familiar tune, it sounded like the one my mother use to hum to me when she tried to get me to fall asleep, while rocking me.
I turned my head, towards the window, where sunlight was trying to come through the curtains. “Mom?” I whispered.
A warm hand touched my forearm. “Hey sleepyhead.” Sams voice whispered.
I slowly opened my eyes, and saw Sam smiling down at me.
“How are you feeling?” She asked observing the monitors next to the bed.
“Good.” I croaked out, my mouth felt like a desert, and right now I need an oasis.
“Oh right.” After, handing me a cup full of water, she walked over towards the windows.
I heard footsteps coming from my left side, I didn‘t bothering at looking to see who it was.
Suddenly I remembered about my baby. “Hey Miche-” I sprayed the water that I was about to swallow, onto the person on the left.
“My baby,” I whispered. I consciously put my hand on my stomach, but to only feel that it was flat, and I no longer had my adorable baby bump.
“I didn‘t know I was taking another shower this morning.” I turned to see Riley wiping down his face, and arms, with his jacket that was in his hands.
My ears tuned into the humming again. I turned to the right to see my mom sitting on a recliner, with something in her arms. It was wrapped in pink blanket.
Mom glanced up at me, a bright smile on her face as she hummed away.
Relief swept through me.
My darling baby girl was alive.
My mom stood up, and walked towards me, Sam took my mothers spot on the recliner as soon as she stood up, and took a few steps.
Her humming growing louder as she stepped closer and closer to me. I felt nervous, and excited at the same time. I wanted to hold her, to feel her little land wrap around one of my fingers, to watch her fall asleep on me. It felt like my motherly instinct was taking over.
Finally what felt like eternity, my mom was right next to my bed. “Remember that tune that I use to hum to you at night, when you would get fussy?”
I kept my eyes on the pink bundle in her arms, and quickly glanced up at her. “Sort of, but I think it was a song. From some movie.” I tried to remember, but all I wanted was my baby in my arms. That’s all I was thinking about.
My mom smiled gently at me. “I‘ve been singing it to her.” She said, while bending towards me slightly. “She really likes it. Just like you did.”
I smiled up at my mom, she already loved the same melody as me. I cradled my arms in instinct, so ready to see my baby angel, as my mom gently slide her into my arms.
Stepping away, my mom sang, “Dancing bears.” I knew that line instantly. Anastasia. That was the movie that song came from, it was also one of my favorite movies when I was a kid.
I stared down at the pink bundle in my arms, she was wrapped up tightly, and covered so I couldn‘t see her face. Suddenly, an arm popped out, it was the cutest thing I have ever seen.
Laughs filled the room, and I remembered baby, and I weren’t the only ones in the room.
I looked to the left to see Riley, with his slightly damp button up pink shirt, Miles right next to him wearing dark skinny jeans, and a maroon v-neck t-shirt. At the foot of the bed was Derek wearing a dark blue long sleeve, with grey skinny jeans, and Sam wearing a floral dress, their hands interlaced. And to my right my mom in sweatpants, and a black sweater, a bright smile still fixated on her face.
I was about to look down at my baby again, when I heard my name being called down the hall, and the footsteps coming face.
Coming around the corner, I saw a brown headed guy, I looked closed to see some blonde highlights, that‘s new. His back facing us, and he soon turned around. It was Rikki, all dressed in what looked like his basketball practice uniform.
“Found you.” He smiled at me from the hallway, and soon came jogging to the side of the bed, a pink gift bag was in one hand.
“Hey.” I smiled.
“Hello.” Rikki said, smiling warningly at me. “This is for you.” He said kind of sheepishly, while placing the bag, on the bed close to me, and then he went to go say his ‘hellos’ to everyone.
She started squirming in my arms, as if she was stretching, so I loosened my grip. Soon enough she started to cry softly. I looked up at my mom terrified, she mouthed ‘sing’, to me.
It must have been because it had gotten loud in the room from the conversation, or she just wanted to hear the song again.
I looked down to see a head full of brown hair, just like Everetts.
I couldn’t see her eyes since they were closed. That’s what I was really curious about, on whether she would have my eye color, being a deep blue, with a touch of green or pure green, just like Everetts. Or maybe some other color that’s not one of ours.
Her cries started to grow a little louder, so I began singing the familiar tune from my childhood.
I gently started rocking her. “Dancing bears.”
Her cries grew softer, and I smiled at my precious angel. “Painted wings.”
She outstretched one of her little arms, hand opened. “Things I almost remember.”
“And a song, someone sings.” I placed my index finger inside her hand.
She wrapped her hand around it, it was so precious, how little her hand was. “Once upon a December.”
Soon, her little hand loosened, telling me she had fallen asleep.
“And that‘s exactly how I use to put you to sleep.” My mom smiled down at the both of us.
“Alright, ” Riley stated. “ this is a Kodak moment right here.”
“Definitely.” Sam agreed.
“Oh!” My mother exclaimed, as if she just won at Bingo or something.
“Mom, You didn‘t name here,… did you?” I glanced up at her, still rocking my baby gently.
“No, no, of course not.” She said shaking her head. “That‘s what you still need to do, you need to name her.” Excitement filled her voice.
I glanced around the room to see all eyes on me, then down at my precious girl. What do you name such and adorable child, who seems so fragile, and perfect.
“Do you need help? Or do you have one picked out already?” Rikki asked.
Shaking my head, “No, no.”
Mentally I started naming names.
Carmen?
Miley?
Valerie?
Cassandra?
Emily?
Jennifer?
Isabella? That one sounded good.
Christina?
Oliva? I liked that one too.
Violet, was also one I liked, it was unique.
Aubrey, sounded like a good one too.
Marie?…
“Marie.” I stated aloud.
Sam grinned. “That ones cute, right Derek?” She shifted her gaze to him.
He nodded in agreement. “I actually like that one too.”
Marie would definitely be one of her names, it seemed so fitting, but I wasn’t sure if it should be her first or middle name.
Chelsea?
Alexia?
Evelyn?
Jordan?
Jessica?
But, none of them seemed suited for her. She needed something that had a ring to it, one that sounded like it was made for her.
I keep thinking of names, searching for one that would be perfect for her.
And then it hit me, Natalie... Natalie Marie.
“Excuse me.” A small voice called from the door, I looked up to see it was the nurse. She smiled at me. ”I was wondering if you had a name for your baby yet?”
I smiled back, and nodded. Turning my gaze back to my baby girl. “Natalie Marie.”
“What a beautiful name.” She stated as she wrote it down. “Last name?”
I froze.
Last name? I turned to look at my mom.
“She can have ours,” My mom whispered down to me. “ but it‘s whatever you want.”
Slowly nodding, understanding. I knew what I wanted, and it was the right thing to do on my part, I think. “Thompson.”
The lump that was in my throat hurt while I said it, and it was hard to swallow.
“Got it.” She smiled, and just as she was about to leave the room, she turned around and said, “Your baby is going to have the best life, I‘ve never seen this many family members, and friends” She gestured around the room, “coming to see a newborn before.”
I bet she was new, because I’m pretty sure they’re bigger families that have been here before me.
And sure enough, “Well, I‘m new,” she smiled again. “ but you‘re a very blessed girl. And just in case you didn‘t know,” she looked down at the clipboard in her hands. “Natalie weighted six pounds and eleven ounces, and her length was eighteen and a half inches.”
I laughed though my nose, of course my baby would be so small. “Thank you.” I gave her one last smile, and then she finally left.
“She‘s so tiny.” My mom cooed down at her.
“That‘s a perfect name for her too!” Riley announced. “Can I hold her?”
“Of course,” I laughed. “ come here.”
I gently placed her in his arms, and watched as he stared down at her in awe.
“Oh, open my gift I got her!” Rikki pushed the bag into my lap.
I hesitantly opened it, scared of what he had gotten, hopefully none of the graphic onesies from the Spencers store, that had ‘I’m what’s happened in Vegas’, or anything similar to that.
I reached inside, and pulled a onesie out. Unraveling it, I turned it towards me to see that it was a custom made one, “I love Uncle Rikki.” A heart underneath it, it was too cute. “Thanks Rikki, I‘m sure she‘ll love you too… hopefully.” I laughed.
“Seemed appropriate, Everyone knows I‘ll be the favorite uncle, am I right?”
All the guys in the room glared at him. Boy, Natalie is going to have a lot of ‘favorite uncles’.
I looked around to see everyone laughing, it seemed like everything was perfect, but it also felt like something was missing from this picture. Pushing the feeling away I turned my gaze to see Miles passing Natalie to Sam.
She grinned, and looked up at Derek. “I so want a baby Derek.” she giggled.
Derek blushed mad red, I felt sorry, because all the guys started teasing him, and all he could do was stand there and blush, while rubbing the back of his neck. Until finally he announced. “At least I have a girlfriend queers.”
All the guys had a priceless expression on their faces, while their mouths were hanging open.
“Now that is a Kodak moment.” I said while laughing.
Rikki muttered a, “Whatever.”
Riley simply said, “I‘m working on it.”
And Miles said, “I‘m always working.”
I couldn’t help the smiled that came onto my face.
This has to be the most amazing day of my life.
I was blessed with the most gorgeous baby girl in the world, and I couldn’t have asked for anything better.
From this day forward, the only person that has my heart, is my beautiful girl, Natalie Marie.
