The next day I woke up to Roger opening the front door.

I rubbed my eyes and stifled a yawn, "Where are you going?"

He looked at me with surprise, "Oh you're awake. I'm going to work, won't be back until later tonight."

My eyebrows pulled together, did I hear him right? "Okay," I paused, "Bye."

"Bye," he pulled the door shut behind him.

Was he serious? He was just going to go to work an leave me alone all day? I grinned as a plan took form in my head.

I had an entire day without him checking up on me. If I managed to escape I would have hours before anyone even knew I was gone. Was he stupid? Probably. I ran into the bedroom, not wasting any time, and pulled on my shoes.

I got to the front door and peeked out into the hallway, making sure no one was in the hall. When I saw that it was clear, I ran out toward the ladder that I had previously tried escaping through. I smiled as I grew closer to it, but frowned when I noticed a shiny silver lock fastened to the top.

"No, no, no," I shook my head, climbing up and attempting to push it open. I slammed my hand on the door when I realized it wouldn't budge.

"Fuck," I mouthed.

I thought of any other way to get out. The lobby? Maybe If I acted perfectly nonchalant, they wouldn't suspect I was attempting escape?

It was worth a shot. I strode back into the apartment and searched for the key they used to unlock the doors. Maybe Roger had a spare card that I could use to unlock the door? He had to. I spent a good twenty minutes combing through the drawers, hoping I might find it.

I groaned in frustration, looking at the clock. I was losing time, I'd just have to wing it.

I left the apartment and got into the elevator taking a deep breath as it descended down toward the lobby. I couldn't think about what might happen if things went bad or I would chicken out.

Be brave, Natalie. Don't go down without a fight, I thought to myself. With courage from my short pep talk, I walked into the lobby with confidence. A large man sat behind a reception desk and frowned slightly upon noticing me.

I smiled at him as I walked to the door. I knew it would be locked. I just had to find a way to make him unlock it for me.

Fake it.

I reached down into the pockets on my sweatpants and feigned surprise. "Damn," I turned to him.

I pretended to be distressed.

"I must have lost the key and I was supposed to meet my partner at his car, he said he would wait for me there."

He looked unsure, "Your partner is waiting for you outside?"

"Yes," I nodded, "I'm already taking too long, I don't have time to search for the card. Do you think you could open the door for me?"

He thought about it for a moment, "I guess so, if you're partner is outside there."

I smiled gratefully, "Thank you so much, I just don't want to make him wait any longer."

"I understand," he even smiled a little bit. He walked over to me and took out his own card.

Was this plan seriously working? I kept my smile on my face, my heart beating quickly.

He scanned his card at the door and opened it for me, "Have a good day miss."

"You too," It took everything in me not to sprint through the doorway.

I walked through at a normal pace and he closed the door behind me. I watched him turn and walk back to his desk through glass.
