Chapter 73

Emily came straight back up to our hotel room after she’d finished eating, and looked rather flustered as she did so.

“Charles” she called as soon as she walked back into the room. “Where are you?”

“Where you left me” I called back, still sitting hunched over by the toilet. “I never moved.”

As she walked in, her face sort of dropped. “You look even worse that what you did before I left. You’re not pale anymore, you’re like…green.”

I rolled my eyes as another wave of sickness washed over me.

“Charles” she began again. “Jackson is coming upstairs later to see if you should get sent home.” I was somewhat happy with what she was saying – I really did not want to be there any longer. The entire field trip so far had hardly progressed, and I felt like death.

“I don’t want to go home though” I murmured from the toilet bowl. “I’ll be fine. It’s probably just a bug or something.”

Emily shrugged. “I don’t know Charlotte, you look even worse than you did the last time. Maybe you should say something to him. It’d be for the best.”

I shook my head.

“Well then, at least come down so that they can see you’re okay?”

I nodded.

Shakily, I stood up. “Right then,” I smiled. “Do I still look like I’m dying?”

“Somewhat” Emily laughed nervously. “You should apply a shit load of foundation to your face, and maybe freshen your makeup. Right now, you’re fooling nobody.”

I rolled my eyes at her as I fully stood, turning around to take a look at myself in the mirror. Em was completely right – I looked terribly ill. They were never going to see past me, but I wasn’t getting sent home.

“Em, I can’t let them see me like this” I panicked. “I really can’t go home.”

“I wish I could go home” she remarked casually, still staring at me. “But, then again” she added, “I suppose you want to be around Matt and Laura because…well…you know.”

I actually hadn’t thought about it like that until Emily commented on it, but then it made perfect and complete sense. Laura obviously didn’t know what was going on between Matt and I, and she probably thought she still had a chance with him.

I rummaged through my makeup bag which had been conveniently placed on the sink by Emily, and get out everything I needed to make myself look less ill.

“I think I’m going to vomit” I whined as I applied some more eyeliner. “I swear to God, it’s been like this for a month now.”

Although I wasn’t looking at her, I could see Emily’s empathetic gaze from her reflection in the mirror.

“Don’t look at me like that Em” I laughed, before staring at her more effectively.

“I know what you’re thinking and don’t even go there” I spoke bluntly. Just don’t. The very thought freaked me out to no end, and that was the very last thing on my mind.

“Well, Charlotte,” she grinned awkwardly, “it’s a possibility right? Or, have you not…done…anything.”

I turned around to her, raising my eyebrows. “Emily, I’m not.”

“Well…”

“We have, okay, but, I can’t be” I argued, completely sure of myself. “I always get ill – you know that.”
