He dropped the ball. It was in his hands.
"C'MON JULIAN!" I screamed. I got shot a dirty look. Tom handed it off to Stevan, who was clobbered. I swore. He threw to Julian who crossed the 40 yd. line.
"YOU GO BRO!"
Another throw to Julian for a first. I shot him a thumbs up which was returned by him pumping his fist. I grinned. Tom threw to Aaron downfield while I was nervously watching. Aaron missed and came off the play limping. Tom handed it off to Stevan and he impressively got to the 26. He tried to throw to Julian who missed.
"IT'S ALRIGHT JULES! SHAKE IT OFF BOYS!"
Tom again threw it to Julian who weaves in between huge players to the 16 yd. line. Jairus Byrd was injured, so they came over to the sideline. I hugged Julian.
"I'm proud of you bro. Over 1000 yds.," I said with a grin. He smiled.
"Thanks Alex. Keep screaming. It keeps us on our toes."
He grinned and Stephen went off to kick a field goal, which he obviously made.
I stood by Alex.
"So how're we looking?" I asked. She grinned.
"Julian, you always look fabulous. Who are you kidding?" she said. I nodded.
"You're not wrong." I grinned crookedly. "I mean as a team, though. Like playing football wise."
"You guys look good. And I'm gonna slap someone if they can't pronounce Michael's name right. Hoomanawanui. It's not that hard."
"I know Alex," I said with a grin. "Alright, people look pissed. I'm gonna go talk to Tom so it doesn't look like I'm slacking off."
She kissed my cheek.
"Good luck bro. I'm behind you."
I lined up. The ball was snapped. I looked at Danny who grinned as I gunned it down the field. Tom handed off to LeGarrette who scored a touchdown. We were off the field as soon as we were on.
"Bill, I'm gonna talk to the team after you do, ok?" I ask/told him. He nodded and went into the locker room. He came out about twenty minutes later, and I went in. There was a mass of sweaty football players. Julian was front and center, and I threw my arm around his shoulder.
"HEY GUYS!" I yelled. That got their attention.
"Alright, guys, you can go as soon as I tell you guys this."
"Make it quick Alex," Julian groaned. I punched him playfully.
"Alright guys. I just wanted to tell you that, as a team, you guys have been amazing to work with. I'm so proud of you. Some of you I've become great friends with, and others I barely know as players. But a lot of you are great friends who I've come to love like siblings, while others I'm quickly becoming friends with. It's honestly been amazing kinda-sorta-not-really coaching you. I'm not sure if a drills coach even exists." I shrugged. "But it's been great being one. Even if it doesn't truly exist anywhere else. I love you guys and thanks for a great season. But it's not over yet. Alrighty guys! Get showered and stuff. I love ya!"
I left and went to speak with Bill.
