Alone at Christmas

At Christmas, you look around and everyone is happy;

you see my face, and it is not happy.

At Christmas, everyone gathers around the fire;

my toes are as cold as ice because I have no fire.

At Christmas, you cuddle up with your mum on the sofa;

I cuddle up with a thin blanket, while my mum is being abused on the sofa.

At Christmas, you spend time with your whole family;

I spend my time with the being inside me as that is now my only family.

At Christmas, you sit down and have a wonderful Christmas meal;

I scavenge the streets looking for my next meal.

At Christmas, you all sit around the Christmas tree and open presents;

I sit on the pavement begging everyone to give me something as my presents.

At Christmas, you see all the families loving and caring;

no one cares about the pregnant girl who got kicked out on the streets by her step-dad, who was the one that got her pregnant and was now abusing her mother, for this girl there is no loving or caring.

But now......

At Christmas, you see happy faces of girls,

At Christmas, you see my happy face amongst those girls.

At Christmas, you see a loving family,

At Christmas, you see me with my child, she is now my family.

At Christmas, you see a family sitting down having a Christmas meal,

At Christmas, you see my new family at the shelter, having my first proper meal.

At Christmas, you see wrapping paper flying around, as someone opens a present,

At Christmas, you see me opening my first and only Christmas present.

At Christmas, you see a big family who loves and cares for one another,

At Christmas, you see my family filled with people just like me and we will all care for one another.

At Christmas, you realised that that girl might just be ok,

At Christmas, I know I will be fine, I’ve secured a job, I have the support, my daughter is safe and healthy, I just hope my mum is still here and when things settle down, I shall go and visit her because I’m sure she is ok.

This is based on a true story about a girl named Cassidy. Thank you to Maurabear111 for inspiring me, because this poem came second in my schools christmas poetry competition.
