Chapter ❤ One

Severus grunted in frustration as he pulled out his wand and muttered a quick, "Lumos", his voice reverberated off of the walls that were slowly closing in on him from either side and he squinted against the darkness that seemed oppressive from every angle in the narrow hall.

He'd been drawn to the hall by cries for help but now that he had arrived, there was no one to be found. Still he could hear the little groans of someone who was obviously either injured, in pain, or frustrated. All things no one should be in the dank depths of Hogwarts.

Even he had never traversed this deep before, hadn't realized the hall had even been there until he'd happened upon the voice.

"Who's there?" A female voice called into the air and he raised an eyebrow as he grew closer to the little wooden door that he could now see lit at the end of the hall. When he came to it he realized he would have to duck down to move through the doorway.

Peculiar.

"Hello?" That voice was familiar, one he'd heard on too many occasions and he heaved a breath before the door swung open in front of him.

Of course, just as he suspected Hermione Granger was there, leaned against the wall with a nasty gash on the side of her head and her leg bent at an odd angle.

"Granger? What the in the name of Merlin are you doing down here?" He sneered as he stepped into the room and the girl held up a hand, her finger pointed toward the door.

"No don't let it..." The door clicked shut behind him and she grimaced. "Close." She hissed in pain as she shifted in her place and he strolled over to her.

"Exactly why would I be concerned with a door closing?" He was still sneering, looking down on her from the top of his beak-like nose as he made his way to her side and stood towering over her.

"Because, sir," he glared and she almost wanted to let him find out for himself, if only her head didn't hurt so badly. Her vision fuzzed in and out for a moment. "The door won't open after it closes." She swooned, swayed in her spot and her head fell back against the wall.

Severus stared at her with wide eyes, apparently, her injury was worse than he thought. Luckily she came to a second later and stared up at him with rapidly blinking eyes.

"Hold this, and Merlin help you should you use it in any way." He passed his wand off to her, not keen on the idea of holding it between his teeth, and rummaged through the extended internal pocket of his robes for a potion to help the girl out.

He would have to pop her leg back into place it appeared and it would probably hurt her pretty badly, he couldn't have her fainting.

"Drink this." He thrust the vial into her shaking hands and it spilled when she pulled the stopper from its mouth.

"Infantile..." He muttered and snatched the vial away from her before she could spill more of its precious contents.

She could think of a few choice names for him as well when her head didn't throb quite so ardently.

The dark professor thrust the vial to her lips and tipped it back before she could even take a breath and she swallowed it, sputtering and choking on the acrid solution as she did so.

"That was not necessary." She glared up at him and a wicked smirk consumed his face.

"I found it quite pleasurable." It was her turn to sneer up at him, though she had to admit, her head hurt quite a lot less and that was something. She brought finally still fingers to her forehead and the gash was all but gone.

"Thank you, even if you were a complete git about it." She blinked back the sting in her eyes and turned her attention to her leg.

"I will need to set it." He crossed his arms across his chest when she shot him an irritated look.

"Hell you will!" He cocked an eyebrow. "I'll set it myself before you're touching it after that potion business."

Severus blinked at the little witch on the ground in front of him. Had she always been this mouthy or was this a new development after the war? Did her spine thicken that much when she helped defeat the Dark Lord?

"Have it your way then." He turned his back to her and strode back to the door. She shook her head and dust flew into the air from the curly locks. She coughed.

"Not going to open..." She sing-sung under her breath as his hand grasped the old handle and he shot her a glance over his shoulder.

"What was that, Granger?" He snarled and she blinked up at him innocently.

"Nothing, sir."

"Good, I am certain you would hate to lose house points in such a dire situation." He sneered over his shoulder and tugged the door toward him. Or at least, he thought he had. It didn't budge and he gave the wood an ugly look.

"Alohamora." He spoke clearly and flicked his wand at the door. It clicked but when he tugged it didn't open yet again.

"It doesn't work." She blinked up at him as he turned back and leaned against the door, long fingers massaged his forehead.

"I believe I realize that now, Granger." He sneered and she shrugged her shoulders and set to work tugging on her leg. He heard the uncomfortable crack and her muffled cry of pain. It pulled his eyes to her against his wishes and she sat, hunched over her shattered leg with tears rolling down her cheeks.

"Let me help you." He started over and she held up a hand, her teeth digging into her bottom lip until he was certain she would rip it away, or tear it in two.

"I don't need your help." She bit out and tugged at the leg again, it cracked and she cried out, her voice cracking.

"Cease with your attitude and allow me to assist you. Stroppy witch." He snarled and knelt to help her, whether she wanted him to or not.

She screamed and grasped his shoulders tightly when he wrenched her leg straight and several cracks echoed through the room in succession. Her fingertips dug into the flesh of his shoulders and back but he hardly complained as she took heaving breaths.

When she finally released him and leaned back he cocked an eyebrow and stood.

"Better?"

"Phenomenally." She grunted irritably and tipped her head back against the wall.
"You may as well sit, Professor, you're the first person I've seen in more than three hours and I doubt anyone else will come strolling by anytime soon. Lucky for us you thought to close the door so we cannot simply walk out." She sassed and he shot her a cold glare as he slid down the wall beside her.

"Granger..." He sneered in warning and she held up her hands in defeat.

"I was only stating a fact."

"Silence. I require silence." He snarled and she rolled her eyes behind her closed eyelids. She wouldn't dare roll her eyes in front of him.

"Oh and please, call me Hermione, if they're going to find our corpses side by side I believe at least one of us should be on a first name basis." He glanced at her with a blank look on his face but his eyes blazed his irritation.

Propriety be damned, if she kept it up he would show her who was boss one way, or another.
