"What do you mean our flight was cancelled?" I demanded. Tom sighed.
"Alex, I'm sorry. Look at it out there. The runway is all icy, and even if it weren't, the snow is so bad the pilots wouldn't be able to see at all. It's horrible out," he said. I looked outside, and he was right. It was snowing like a blizzard out there.
"Tom, this means we won't make it home for Christmas," I said softly, looking at the ground. He sighed again.
"I know Alex. I'm sorry. If there was anything I could do about it, I would. We're just gonna have to stay at the hotel another night or two."
I hugged him. Julian came over.
"You hear?" I asked. He nodded glumly.
"Let's get back to our rooms," Tom suggested. I nodded.
"Yeah," Julian replied softly. All 54 of us went back inside the hotel, and to the rooms. I sat on the bed, and immediately called Rob.
"Hey babe," he answered.
"Hey Rob," I replied.
"What's wrong?" he asked.
"Um....." I sighed. "I won't be home for Christmas. Our flight got cancelled, and-and it's just horrible out over here. I'm sorry."
"It's ok," Rob said. "At least you'll be with people you love."
I nodded, even though he couldn't see me. Maybe that was a good thing. Tears welled up in my eyes, but I wiped them away quickly.
"Yeah. I love you Rob. Merry Christmas."
"I love you too Alex. Merry Christmas."
I hung up and called Tom's cellphone.
"I have an idea. Get whatever guys wanna come together and meet in my room," I told him.
"Um...ok. I'll be there in ten."
There was enough room for 54 people in here. And if not, Julian's room was adjoined with mine. I waited for the guys and ordered hot cocoa and some champagne and wins from room service. There was a knock on my door, and I answered it. In came a few of the guys. Jamie Collins, Rob Ninkovitch, Michael Hoomanawanui, Stevan Ridley, Chandler Jones, Logan Ryan, Logan Mankins, Devin McCourty, Aquib Talib, Shane Vereen, Stephen Gostkowski, Dane Fletcher, and Tom, Julian, Danny, and Austin were the one who came. I figured the others would wanna be alone and talk to their families on the phone.
"Hey guys. Um...c'mon in."
The sixteen football players came in, and we all fit comfortably. (This room was massive.)
"So I know we're all kinda bumming because we won't be home for the holidays. I kinda figured as long as we're here, we could celebrate together. I mean, at least we get to celebrate with people we care about. So anyway, I bought some champagne, wine, and hot cocoa, and I figured we could watch a movie or whatever. Alright...so anyone have any specific Christmas/holiday traditions?" I asked. Michael raised his hand, along with Tom, Dane, and Stevan.
"My family watches Elf with Will Ferrell every year," Tom said. Michael, Dane and Stevan nodded.
"Alright, so I'll rent Elf and we'll start our team Christmas celebration."
I popped in Elf and we started our celebration.
