Chapter 133 –That's Crazy– Raine's POV

We had stayed the night and through the next day. Acheron's sources were still trying to locate the mage who could break the bond. Our plan was to leave right after the he arrived and severed Queen Ileana's connection to Armand.

Restlessness settled onto our small group, none wanting to stay any longer than we had to. As soon as the sun went down, we migrated outside to wait. It was better than being cooped up indoors. Acheron and Skoldr did not follow us. I was thankful. Relatives or not, both of them gave me the creeps.

Our group was spread out, some sitting in chairs, others perched on the natural landscape of fallen logs, and the rest on the ground. Cage sat on the grass with his back against a tree trunk, both arms wrapped around me securely, not letting me move out from between his legs, my back tight against his chest. Not that I wanted to go anywhere. There was no place I would rather be than tucked into his embrace.

Tobias sat close to us. He was whittling away at a small chunk of wood, lost in his own thoughts. He had his sleeves rolled up. The moonlight reflected off of his plentiful scars. I murmured, "Tobias."

He head came up to look at me.

"Tell me about the scars. Why did you cut yourself?" I asked softly.

His face twisted into a grimace, his eyes vacant for a moment as harsh memories flooded his mind. His jaw was tight, line prominent in his forehead. "Because it dulled the other pain."

"I don't understand," I whispered.

"I cut my flesh so that I couldn't feel the agony of the loss of my mate. The relief never lasted long, but for a few moments, I could breathe again."

I inhaled sharply. I didn't know he had lost a mate. His actions never revealed it. He didn't seem to be in pain, but maybe he had grown a high tolerance to it and could effectively conceal it. I  also hadn't noticed him practicing self-mutilation. Then again, why would he engage in it in front of me? Still, I wondered and asked softly, "Do you still cut yourself?"

He shook his head. "No, the pain is gone."

Cage sat straight up behind me, no longer relaxed, his attention fully focused on our conversation. "Wait a minute, are you saying you no longer feel the loss of your mate?"

Tobias nodded.

How was that even possible?

Cage leaned forward, pushing me along with him, the intensity of his voice rising, "How did you make the pain go away?" All eyes were focused on us now.

Tobias stared at me in confusion, his gaze locked on mine. "I didn't make the pain go away. You did."

"What?!" I gasped.

"That day in Quinn's kingdom. You healed me."

"I healed you?" I repeated. His words were staggering. My mouth was dry. Adrenaline raced through my veins. My brain struggled to make sense of it. I pulled the memory of those moments to the forefront of my mind. I remembered his words, "The pain is gone," but I hadn't known what he was referring to and then I simply forgot about it later.

Echo interrupted brashly, "Why didn't you say anything before now?!"

Tobias responded defensively, "I did, in that moment. But since I never talked about my pain before, why would I seek to discuss the absence of it after? And I just assumed Queen Raine knew she had the ability to heal, so I never questioned her orders, or our mission in coming here."
