Apocalypse
"I really hate to ask you to do this, Katie, but would you be able to come and clean out John's office? He left some things and we wanted to make sure he got them," asked Meredith, a colleague of John's.
"Yeah, whatever, I'll come. I can't promise you I won't burn his medical degree," Katie said, meaning every last word.
"You can't be mad at him forever, Katie. You did love him once," Meredith offered.
"Key word there is once. I haven't loved him for a long time. That's why he left for the military, again. That's why we got divorced," Katie said, exasperated.
"Just because you are divorced doesn't mean you can't still help him," Meredith said.
"Yes it does. I'm a lawyer. I know how these things work," Katie said, annoyed.
"I'm sorry, Katie," Meredith said.
"I'll come by after I'm done with this client," Katie sighed.
She slammed the phone down on her desk. She ran her hands through her dark hair and sighed.
Her client knocked on the office door.
After a couple of hours they were finished with their strategy session and she got in her big Mercedes G-class.
She drove to Harrison Memorial Hospital, feeling bitter and resentful. There was nothing in the world that she would rather do less than go to John's office.
She used to look forward to going there. She used to go there to spend time with him on Fridays for lunch. It had always been their tradition.
John used to be a neurosurgeon there before he left to be in the military. Leaving was his way of coping after Tommy.
It had been a while since it happened but ever since then, John had gotten worse and worse. He finally left for another term and he decided to never come back.
She stayed with him for longer than she should have. She was and still is loyal to a fault. And she did not have many faults. She was wealthy and beautiful and kind and funny and everyone liked her. She was hard not to like.
She walked into John's old office. It had not changed at all. There was still and old family photo of the three of them sitting on his desk next to his nameplate.
"Dr. John L. Evans... I'm so glad I hyphenated," she sighed to herself.
After they got divorced, she dropped the Evans off of her name and went back to being Katie King like nothing had happened. But something did happen.
She was different now.
She packed up all of his things. She picked up the box and started walking back towards the door when she heard machine gun fire and screaming.
