It was the most devastating news of your life, the words still clearly rung in your head.

“You have terminal cancer and only have a few months left to live.”

How could this happen? And after you had just found happiness with Zyglavis. You hadn't even had much time together and now your life was going to be cut short before it even began.

You had known for a while something wasn't right with your body but you never thought it would be this bad.

Sitting on the edge of your bed you wept into your hands, “Why is this happening… I...I don't want to die.” Your voice came out in muffled sobs.

Besides you, with a troubled look on his face, was Zyglavis. He gently stroked your back but he knew calming you was pointless- everything was pointless when you would soon be gone.

“This is absurd. What cruel fate is this that would deprive this world of such a beautiful soul.” Pained deeply, Zyglavis just couldn’t bear the thought you would die and leave him. Just when he thought it was hopeless and was ready to give up, Zyglavis pulled himself together and inwardly scolded himself for even thinking such a thing; how could he ever give up when your life was at stake? There just had to be something he could do; Zyglavis wasn't ready to just accept your death.

“Zyglavis… I'm sorry to put you through this pain. If only I wasn't a fragile human then I wouldn't have to go and die like this and leave you alone.” With tear filled eyes you looked at Zyglavis, feeling regret that you really would have to leave him behind.

A tender smile formed on his lips as his hand moved to stroke your tear stained cheek, “Even now you put others before yourself. What am I going to do with you,” Zyglavis chuckled softly, not because he was happy but because you continued to surprise him with your selflessness.

You turned away feeling a little bashful, “I can't help it. You are the most important person in my life. I don't want to make you sad…” Before you had a chance to look up to see his reaction a pair of warm arms had enveloped you in a hug, “These feelings you bring me...,” Zyglavis sighs softly, “You drive my heart crazy; I didn’t think it was possible to love someone this much but then I met you and my whole world changed.”

Zyglavis slowly pulled back just enough to look you in the eyes, using one hand to gently cup your cheek, “I can't let things end this way, there must be something we can do, something we haven't thought of. I refuse to just let you die.” There was a fire burning in his eyes. Zyglavis was seriously thinking on how he could save you; there was no way this minister could watch the love of his life pass away before his eyes.

His determination shocked you. Your mouth opened and closed, but you weren't sure what to say, “Zyglavis… There is no cure. It's useless…” You wished with all your heart for a miracle but you knew no such thing would happen.

Though you say that Zyglavis refused to back down, “Have you forgotten I'm a god? Maybe there is no cure on Earth but what if there is one in the heavens?” Zyglavis’ words made your eyes grow wide, a spark lit inside you- a spark of hope- would the heavens hold the answers you seeked?

Zyglavis wasted no time in scouring the heavens for a cure, questioning all knowledgeable gods and searching all books of interest.

“Nothing.” Zyglavis picked up one book after another, “Nothing. Nothing!” Angry, Zyglavis threw the book to the ground. No matter how hard he searched everything all pointed to one thing: your death. There was no miracle you hoped for; Zyglavis efforts were proving useless and it troubled him greatly.

He painfully watched as you grew weaker by the day; your skin grow colder and your eyes lose their lustre. Zyglavis knew each day brought you closer to death, he was running out of time and fast. With no cure in sight, Zyglavis didn’t know how he would be able to save you and grant your wish of leading a happy life together.

Zyglavis was at his wit ends; the usually calm and composed god was an utter mess. “Why must I be fated to always lose what is most dear to me? Life seems to always find a way to take away my happiness…” Zyglavis sat in his chair with his hand on his forehead, his face twisted with grief.

You were now completely bedridden. Your time on this planet was fast coming to an end.

“Zyglavis…” You weakly spoke his name. He sat besides you on the bed gently holding your frail hand in his own; he could feel how cold your hand had gotten, oh how he missed the warmth and soft touch of your hands.

It was just too much for him; watching you suffer and your life slowly fade away... Zyglavis couldn’t let you die like this; he only knew of one other option and if it meant saving you he wasn't afraid to do it.

Seeing the sudden seriousness in his eyes had you concerned, “Zyglavis?” You mustered up all your energy to say his name in a clear and concise voice.

Zyglavis stood up and looked at you firmly, “I can't do this. I refuse to just watch you die,” He shook his head and placed a hand on his chest, “I wish there was some other way but I'm afraid fate has deemed us unable to live our lives together. We simply can not be together in this world.”

You were confused by his words. Growing worried you tried to sit up but just didn't have the energy, “Zyglavis… What are you talking about?” You asked, looking at him with cloudy eyes.

“I'm going to give up my life so you may have a second chance. I want you to keep on living and find happiness with someone else; happiness that I am unable to bring you.” Zyglavis said and started to glow with a faint light.

Knowing what he was trying to do you grew frantic in an attempt to stop him. Gripping onto his clothes you say, “Stop! I don't want you to give your life for me. Please…!” You struggled to get out your words and only wished you had the energy to get across what you really wanted to say.

You couldn’t live with yourself if he died for you. How could you ever be happy without him?! What he was trying to do was utterly ludicrous. But no matter what you said he wouldn't stop.

“St...op…” Your words now came out in between muffled sobs as tears overflowed from your eyes.

Zyglavis looked at you, his body shining brilliantly, it would have been something beautiful if it didn't signal his death, “Please know I will always love you. You mean the world to me and showed me what it really meant to love someone. Thank you for bringing such joy into my life now allow me to save you so you can continue bringing joy to others; a happiness I can no longer share in.”

“No...No...No…” You repeated over and over while shaking your head and crying in frustration. You just couldn’t stop him and his words were like a dagger to your heart; sharply slicing you in two.

Slowly, Zyglavis leaned over placing a soft kiss on your forehead as his hands cupped your cheek, “I love you...goodbye.” Before your eyes Zyglavis breaks apart in thousands of particles of light and washes over your body; you knew Zyglavis must have been in pain the whole time but purposely kept his pain hidden so your final moments together weren’t of him in pain.

Zyglavis did indeed save you. A god gave his life to save a human; he showed true selflessness that day. Zyglavis showed just how deep his love for you truly was. But now… you were all alone. Zyglavis never thought how you would feel; he may have not been able to live without you but just how were you meant to live without him?

You wanted to just die and give up but how could you when Zyglavis gave his life so you may live. You had to do your best to keep moving forward and find your happiness because that's what he would have wanted. But just how do you find happiness in a world he does not exist; he was your world and all the happiness in it.

“Selfish… How could you do this to me… I should have been the one to die…!” Every night you'd cry yourself to sleep, talking to Zyglavis as if he was right there besides you. You just couldn't accept he was no longer alive and only wished time would pass faster so you could be free of the heaviness, the pain of loss that plagued your heart. Until then, you would meet with Zyglavis in your dreams, the only place you could find solace in your now empty life.
