I could almost feel the awkward tension between Liam and Harry as I led the two boys back into my childhood home, which strangely enough didn't even look that much different. It shouldn't be that much of a shock though, neither my mother nor myself are big on interior design or any of that nonsense.
Back to the boys though, they kept giving each other these weird looks and I felt like I should be waiting for one of them to punch the other. I don't even know what I would do if that happened. Would I try to protect Liam, or Harry?
As I pushed open the door to my house, I felt a hand touch the small of my back and very wrongly assumed it was Liam.
"Hands off." I heard Liam say in a low voice. Turning around, I saw that it was Harry touching me and I flinched away.
Harry opened his mouth to snap back at Liam, an angry expression on his face, but I beat him to it.
"Okay so yeah, my mum and Shawn are in here." I said quickly, pushing through the kitchen door and not sparing them a second glance.
As the three of us walked into my kitchen, both my mum and Shawn looked up. At first my mum smiled widely at me, but when her eyes reached Liam that smile disappeared.
"Oh hello." She said in a tone I know all too well. I glanced to my right at Harry, a worried expression on our faces. He and I both know that when my mum uses that voice, something bad is about to happen.
"Hi there, my name is Liam, I'm a friend of Carter's." Liam said politely, complete oblivious as he outstretched his hand. "I'm so sorry for showing up at your home at a ridiculous hour, but Carter was really anxious to see you and I wanted to help in any way I could." He turned and smiled at me, and I just worriedly looked at my mother.
"Oh it's no trouble at all, I'm just glad to have my daughter back with us after...all this time." She added in a sickly sweet voice. I could already tell this was not going to be good. "Please, have a seat. And of course you too, Carter and Harry."
I flinched at the way she lumped mine and Harry's names together. I should have expected it though. Fuck why didn't I see this coming? My mum and Harry's mum had always wanted us to be together, so she obviously is not going to take lightly to me bringing someone else home after leaving him without a trace.
"Actually Rebecca, I'm going to be heading home." Harry spoke as Liam and I sat down at my kitchen table.
"Nonsense Harry, it's late and I don't want you driving if you're tired."
"Driving?" I asked. "You live like five houses down."
Harry shook his head. "Nah, I've got an apartment further into the city now. I work at an auto shop, pays pretty good, and you know I was ready to get out of that house."
I nodded, wanting to ask more questions but not wanting this situation to be any more uncomfortable than it already is.
"As I said Harry, you'll stay here tonight. You've slept over here thousands of times, remember Carter?"
I could feel Liam tense up in the seat beside me.
"When we were kids, mum." I told her.
"Oh that doesn't matter, you -"
"Mum I'm really tired." Shawn suddenly said from his chair, looking up at us wearily. Turns out Harry had kept him up playing FIFA this whole time.
