A short update ^^

. . .

Weeks spent in Mokpo were not the same as in Seoul. For others, Seoul time would mean a fast-paced time compared to the provinces which Youngjae thinks otherwise. Sure, province life was long but it was not the type of a slow, long, and boring day; it was rather eventful for him.

Although every day is like the usual, there would always be something new which he learned to anticipate daily. The sounds of birds chirping across his window, wakes him up everyday contrasting the city noise of busy streets in Seoul. Then right after, he would either walk around the neighborhood, greeting some of the friendly neighbors a bow and a smile, or he would cross path with the delivery girl whose name is Wonhye according to his grandmother. He still plays on his computer every other day or when he doesn't have many things to do to help Sunhwa during the day. In the afternoon, he goes out to the playground and watch kids play happily.

He slowly associates himself with people but there only one remained unchanged, his silence.

The grandmother opened the gates to accept the porridge delivery from Wonhye, giving the girl a warm smile after her usual greetings of good morning and how is your sleep, Halmeoni? "I had a good night sleep, Wonhye-ah. Ah, let me get the money inside, alright? Wait here," she said, turning her heels to return inside her house.

Youngjae went out from the house a minute later, meeting her outside. She still hasn't noticed him though but he noticed she was humming a sound, earphones stuck in her ears. He stared at her without himself knowing and it took her few seconds before she realized his presence, "Oh, Youngjae-ssi," that took him out from his trance. "Are you going to take your walk?" He nodded before walking past her to which she could only mutter, "Okay, see you around."

Sunhwa handed her payment then, "Wonhye-ah?" She called before the girl rode on her bike.

The latter responded a quick, "Yes?"

.

"Hey," someone took the sit beside him, a hand reaching out an ice pop. He turned to his left side and saw her beaming a smile at him. He seemed to observe she was wearing a school uniform today, nothing like her rugged clothes during early in the morning. She pressed it to his shoulder, "C'mon, I'm kind enough to share right now," smiling when he finally got it from her hand and peeling the wrapper off.

"You like kids?" She asked, keeping her eyes at the kids building sand castles in the sandbox. Missing his reply of a shrug, she repeated again, this time looking at him, she cackled, "Y'know? You couldn't just simply reply a nod, shake, or shrug. It's bad, to cut a conversation which just started."

Youngjae tilted his head, confused of what she was telling him. That's how he converse, simple. He frowned, a new expression he showed her to which she exclaimed happily. "That's a new one! Come on show me more, like this," and she demonstrated different expression from this to that, that could help him in speaking, not the literal term but for the sake of communication.

He gave off a silent laugh, his eyes missing, turning into a line. She looked at him delighted that she finally saw him smiling heartily at those silly expressions. "Y'know? You should smile more often," she commented, "It looks good on you more than a frown and a straight face."

Then, he suddenly stood up from the swing, making her surprised, "Ah, I didn't mean to offend you though," he faced her and shook his head, smiling once again, sticking out his hand to pull her up like a gentleman does. Staring at his hand, "So, we're now friends?"

Of course, Youngjae didn't answer but he made sure he says that through his action. His hand made its way to her wrist, pulling her up on her feet. Now, he noticed how beautiful her eyes is, he couldn't help himself from staring at it. "Do I have something on my face?" She asked, bringing her hands up her face to brush off that something.

The bells chimed as soon as he stepped inside the house, his grandmother came out from the kitchen to ask him, "Did you have fun with kids?" She smiled seeing a brighter smile from him just now; she mentally made a note to herself to make something for Wonhye when she delivers tomorrow morning as small thanks for making him smile.

.

Ever since that day, Youngjae would anticipate every time of they would see each other, be it during the morning when she delivers or after her school. He even knew now which school she goes, and here he is now, waiting for her by the gates.

The bell rang indicating that classes are over and students cheered up for this, finally they can go out if not going home directly. He taps his foot as high school students swarmed through the gates; they were in groups, voices loud in excitement. He wonder what it feels like being with friends now; he doesn't have much to be called friends back in his school.

"Hey," Wonhye nudged his side, asking him if he waited long for her. He was about to hold her hand when she retrieved it, "I can't spend time with you, I have work after school now," she faintly smiled.

Youngjae got his phone to type down his question to which she showed her right after he finished it, "Why? You work before school now after it too?"

"Yes, it's for school," she looked at her watch and noticed that she only have twenty minutes before her shift in the convenience store. "Jae-ah, I really have to go. I'll just see you tomorrow?" He showed a small smile before nodding. She reached up to pat his cheek, "Don't be sad, oh?"

He could only sigh before she dashed through the street, moving left to right as she went beyond from people. He knows she is a hardworking girl but does she really have to work that much? What about her duties in school? Does she even have a good sleep at night? He really is concerned about her given that she is his only friend.
