Chapter 33 - You Again

Winter's POV

Haze and I drove in silence. We had just left the restaurant and I could tell he was still shook. I was dying to ask him thousand of questions but I knew he needed a moment. The question was why?

All I did was hold his hand and hope to bring him somehow a little bit of comfort. Of course, a couple of options popped in my brain.

Maybe she lost the baby. But then, why would have she told Haze he was a father before they met up? No, there had to be more. He still had a child or he would've told me right away. Instead, before leaving, he told Riley that he would stay in touch.

After a good 10 minutes, Haze took a deep breath and finally spoke.

"There were two of them."

I remained quiet, waiting for him to say more. My mind stayed suck on the word "were". Past tense.

"Twins. One of them died at birth."

My heart broke.

"I know I never met him, but it still hurts." Haze said in a faint voice.

"Oh my god.." I whispered, speechless.

"How did that happen?" I asked, heartbroken.

"Heart failure." He whispered, fighting the tears.

Then, it hit me.
He said him.
As in, Haze had a son.

"And I wasn't there... Because I was too damn young and stupid to be responsible." I saw tears in his eyes.

"No, don't you dare beat yourself up. You were 16, Haze. Do you realize how much of a big step having a child is? Espescially at 16. She ran away and changed her number. You thought she got an abortion. How could you know she didn't?"

"I should've looked. I could've been there... To at least, say goodbye."

Haze stopped the car in front of the Lake House and for a good 2 minutes, we didn't move or speak.

"My son is 3 years old, his name is Jacob. He speaks a lot for his age, he has some trouble making the difference between -he- and -she-" He laughed faintly.

"And for 3 years now, he's thought that his father abandonned him."

As my eyes started to water, I knew all I could do was hold him in my arm and be there for him.

We both got out of the car and I immediately pulled him into a tight hug. I had to get on the tip of my toes to be able to wrap my arms around his shoulders. Because Haze is 6ft 2 and I'm a 5ft5 of bad jokes and sarcasm.

"It wasn't your fault, okay?" I whispered into his ear.

He just held me tighter.

"I love you so much." His voice broke.

"I love you more."

After a while of Haze holding back the pain, I finally asked him the burning question.

"When are you going to meet him?"

"In two days, he's with his grandmother right now."

It hurt me to hear him say that. His son's grandmother would never be my mother. It should be, but it was not.
