“No, mother, it’s not a problem-” Jareth tried to explain to the stern-looking, fair-skinned, white-haired woman in a long, white dress that he was leading to his apartment.

“If it’s not a problem, then why is there a delay?” the woman asked in a condescending tone.

Sarah stopped and pressed up against a wall to hear the discussion.

“There is no delay,” Jareth continued, slightly irritated, “I just think you need a hotel room.”

“Oh, I see how it is; you don’t want your own mother to stay in your home because you’re afraid I’ll look down on your poor choice of living conditions.”

“That isn’t-”

“And when so I get to meet your fiancée?”

Sarah could tell that Jareth was afraid of his mother.

And it was no small wonder.

Jadis even scared Sarah a bit.  Jareth was running out of time to come up with an acceptable answer, so she decided to step in.

Sarah stepped into the hallway with a smile on her face.  “Hello, Jareth!  How are you?” she asked in a flirtatious note in her voice.

Jadis and Jareth both turned to give a surprised look at Sarah, but then Sarah saw the slightest hint of a smile on his face.

“Dear, who is this?” Jadis asked, narrowing her eyes.

“This is my…”

“Fiancée,” Sarah finished, extending her hand to Jadis, “I’m his fiancée.”

Jadis blinked.  “I see,” she said slowly, “Are you the girl that bested his excuse for a labyrinth?”

Jareth closed his eyes and took in a deep breath.

Sarah narrowed her eyes back at the White Witch and retorted, “Yes, I am.  Are you the woman that put an almost-eternal winter over Narnia – and when the winter was broken and you killed Alsan, you went ahead and attacked anyway?”

Jadis blinked again.  “Touché,” she said, turning to her son, “If you ever let her go, I will disown you.”

As Jadis walked past Jareth, his face lit up, and he turned to Sarah to thank her.

Instead, Sarah went up to him and whispered, “You know this is only temporary, right?” and followed Jadis.

Jareth smiled and said to himself, “Oh, we’ll see about that.”
