Chapter 48: She Left Us

“So, what are you doing now?” I asked her. Tom agreed to watch the water whilst I caught up with Kate.

“Well, I have a bachelor in sociology, and I’m looking at going back to Uni to study law.” She told me. My jaw dropped open. Last time I saw her, Kate wanted to be a beautician.

“Wow. That’s awesome Kate!” I exclaimed, high fiving her. She laughed.

“What are you doing here?” She asked me.

“I’m doing lifeguarding with dad and the boys. Got a boyfriend. And yeh. That’s it.” I filled her in on my fascinating life.

“Who’s the guy?” She inquired. I knew that if I said I had a boyfriend, she would skip mocking my career.

“Jesse Polock.” Tom butted in. I glared at him.

“Butt out Bunting.” I shot back. He held his hands up in defence. I continued. “Yeh, Jess is a lifeguard here as well.” I told Kate. She nodded.

“That’s cool.” She replied. We sat in a slightly awkward silence.

“So….” I started to talk, but Kate cut me off.

“So, I need to tell you something. Rod doesn’t know.” She whispered, not wanting Tom to hear.

“What’s up?” I whispered back. She took a deep breath in and told me.

“I’m pregnant. Anthony kicked me out when I told him because the father is a guy who abused me when we were together.” She said rather quickly. I gasped and hugged her.

“Well, congratulations.” I whispered. Kate smiled.

“I know, but I don’t want Rod to kick me out either.” She said. That must have been why she didn’t tell him.

“Hey, you know Dad. He loves you, and wouldn’t ever get mad.” I assured her. She laughed slightly.

“Oh, I hope so.” She said grinned. I smiled.

“He does.” I said again.

“Well, I’m going for a swim, love you forever, bye!” She ran off.

“Kate, don’t swim there!” I yelled. But she ignored me, stripping as she went down to red polka dot bikinis, and dived into the water. Tom nudged me.

“Hook me up?” He asked. I gasped.

“No way! Dad would not be able to cope with you AND Jesse as possible son-in-laws.” I said laughing. Tom rolled his eyes and I watched Kate wade out in the water. I couldn’t help but grin as she tripped, but anxiety took its place when she became a few steps off falling into a rip. She’s a good swimmer, and knew what to do, but I still couldn’t help but be nervous. I turned my head away to check on the other swimmers, only to look back and see Kate with her head in the water, but she was picking something up. I panicked a bit.

“Tom… she’s-“I began to get edgy, but Tom placed a hand on my shoulder.

“You’re over-reacting. Look, her head is up, she’s fine.” He said, rolling his eyes again at me.

“She shouldn’t be swimming here.” I said, still edgy. Tom handed me the microphone, and I was about to call the swimmers in when I spotted a man caught and in trouble. I put the megaphone on the ground, grabbed a board and motioned to Tom to radio in. He did as I told him to, and I stripped down, grabbing a rescue board and paddling out to get the man.
