Look at me go. Two chapters in two days. I’m good! haha I hope you all enjoy it :) ~Emma
I held onto Luke’s hand tightly, glancing around me every now and then. I was beyond scared, though I didn’t want to admit it. Nothing like this had ever happened before to me before. I had always walked around at night freely. But now I could never do that again.
"Em," Luke said, making me look up at him, "It’ll be okay."
I nodded my head, trying to believe him. I don’t know what I would have done if Luke hadn’t shown up when he did. Thank God he was smart enough to know girls shouldn’t go wandering the streets by themselves this late at night. I shivered in the cold night wind. Luke looked down at me; releasing my hand, he shrugged his jacket off and handed it to me.
"Then you’ll be cold," I whispered, still too scared to talk.
"It’s fine," he encouraged. "You need it more than I do."
I pulled it on, relishing in the warmth. It smelled like him; something between the smells of mint and and a forest. Whatever it was, it smelt wonderful. We walked in silence, but he kept a tight grip on my hand. His muscles were tense beneath his shirt and I could tell he was worried that the creep might still be lurking around.
We made it to the nearest McDonald’s, walking inside quickly. Luke released my hand as soon as we were inside and I felt my heart sink a little. I covered it up by walking up and ordering a cheeseburger.
"Here you go," I said, handing over my money, but another hand beat me to it. "Luke, you don’t have to," I said turning to him, but he just shrugged and smiled. "Thank you."
"Here you are Miss," the teenage girl said, handing me the bag. She winked and smiled at Luke. I stifled my laughter as we walked out.
"What?" He asked, looking at me as i burst out into giggles.
"She was so flirting with you!"
"What? No," he shook his head.
"Yes!" I exclaimed.
"Well, she was kinda cute," he smiled to himself. My smile, itself, instantly flew off my face. I ducked my head to try and cover it. "What’s wrong?" Luke asked instantly.
Wow, he’s good at reading people.
"Nothing," I shook my head, plastering a smile onto my face. He looked at me sideways and I could tell he didn’t believe me. "i just want to get there, ya know? I’m kinda creeped out now." He nodded in understanding, moving closer to me. I bit my lip trying to keep a smile off my face. He was such a sweetheart, trying to make me feel safe.
But he doesn’t like you or think you’re cute. A little voice in my head attacked bitterly. Don’t start thinking your anything to him because your not.
My shoulders slumped a little. It was right; I was nothing to him and I never would be.
We made it to Sal’s, the ice cream place, within three minutes.
"There you are!" Ryan exclaimed. He jumped up and walked over to us, worry evident in his eyes and mouth. "Are you okay?" He asked, quietly so only the two of us to hear.
"Everything’s okay now. Luke took care of it," I said quietly, the whole gravity of the situation hitting me at once.
Ryan looked to Luke for confirmation. He nodded and Ryan’s whole body seemed to relax. “I thought something had happened to you.”
"It would have if Luke hadn’t shown up."
"Thanks man," Ryan said to Luke.
"Anytime," the blonde smiled.
"We got you ice cream!" Calum said walking over. "Everything okay?" He asked once it was just the four of us.
Did everybody know something was up?
"Only Ryan and I know something happened." Calum said, reading my mind. "Luke’s my best friend and Ryan isn’t oblivious to his little sister being late."
"Everything’s okay now," I promised.
"Some creep was trying to pull a move on her," Luke explained, his body tensing slightly at the memory.
"That’s it. You’re never going anywhere by yourself ever again," Ryan stated.
"Please and thank you," I sighed.
"Let’s get home," Ryan said, sensing my apprehension of being out.
Soon everyone was up and walking. I lagged behind a little, not liking the feeling of being crowded. An arm wrapped around me and I looked to see Luke smiling.
"You’re shivering again."
"Sorry," I said meekly.
He just smiled and held me closer, warming me up.
Stop kidding yourself. The voice was back. You’re nothing to him.
I picked a spoonful of ice cream up and let it drop back into the bowl, looking at melt like the hopeful part me was at the same time.
